From time to time on boards.ie certain threads are locked as Mods feel the ' Sub Judice ' rule is being breached ( I stress I am not seeking to debate moderator actions here ! ). I am curious as to whether this rule is the result of specific legislation or has it evolved and is more to do with legal ' etiquette ' and good…

From time to time on boards.ie certain threads are locked as Mods feel the ' Sub Judice ' rule is being breached ( I stress I am not seeking to debate moderator actions here ! ).
I am curious as to whether this rule is the result of specific legislation or has it evolved and is more to do with legal ' etiquette ' and good manners as opposed to breaking specific laws ?
What are the penalties ( if any ) for breaching the rule ?

I think it answers your question. Contempt is usually the offence, as against the Court. This can result in conviction or jail until same is purged to the satisfaction of the Court.
