I swear I have done nothing to this picture. Went out to call my daughter in from playing, saw these cloud formation and ran to get the camera. Taken over Swords, end of April 2010. Anyone know what type clouds they are?

A perfect example of Kelvin Helmoltz clouds, formed by varying windspeed with height. Well done to get such a perfect shot! ;)

What date was the photo taken? I'd like to check out the exact setup that caused them. It looks to be evening, looking northwest, would that be right?

This one is not zoomed in.

Yep, facing more west than north but near enough. Photos taken on April 17th. Think about 7:30pm approx. (Trying to remember what time I was bringing my daughter in).

Glad you have a name for them, people in work thought I had photoshopped the picture. Had to bring camera in to show them otherwise.

Thanks for that, it's lucky that no planes were flying at the time, as KH clouds are a sign of bad turbulence. (The volcano has its good side I suppose!)

The 12Z Castor Bay sounding from that day nicely shows the windshear at the inversion, with 10kt below and 35kt wind above it. The negative buoyancy in the warmer air above the inversion causes the tops of the waves to turn over, just like in water.

I am delighted now I can go into work and show them this. They really thought I was playing around with photoshop. In all my years, (44 of them. lol) I have never seen clouds like these, and I have to say I love cloud formations. Art in nature I think.

Su Campu i bet you can list off all the known cloud types;)

Sure, thick black ones, little white fluffy ones, wispy ones....:D

I'd say the rarest here is supercellular Cbs. We get planty of Cbs, but rarely do we get a proper Supercell.

Then there's the morning glory, which only occurs in a few places, most notably northern Australia. :D
