Selling a car privately

Hello, I am selling a car privately and am torn between the payment method
Have met with a potential buyer and he has offered cash, I am a bit wary of cash as not traceable and I cant tell the difference between real and fake cash in all honesty.

So if he gives me a bank draft, what is the best way forward for me to make sure the draft is ok : go in with the buyer to my bank and see if it is valid ?

Also, say the bank draft is ok and I hand the buyer the keys and he drives off. I then have to send the reg. cert off to Clare to get the car registered in his name , what happens in the meantime ( i.e the few days it takes to process in Clare ) if he crashed the car or got up to something dodgy with the car with it still in my name ??

    any advice on above ?
any general tips on selling a car privately ?

I sold a car privately afew months back. I insisted on cash when i spoke to the buyer on the phone, so he appeared with 1500 quid in 50 euro notes. I got meself one of those magic markers that flags up fake notes, so while my father was shooting the breeze with him about what a great cars hes bought, I took the cash inside and made sure it was the real deal. Ya cant be too careful these days.

I presume you could call the bank in question, quote them the number on the draft and see if they agree its legit. Cash is just handier imo.

Bankers draft is as good as money IMO. Do not take a cheque, but if you have to wait until it clears before releasing the car.

Most genuine won't mind you checking the money, if they do they might be up to something sinister. If you get that vibe take a second look at each note and get ask to see their license to prove who they are.

On the VRC you have a date of sale and if you post it ASAP the post office stamp will be dated. It's no longer in your possession from the time of sale, take a photocopy of the VRC and if paid by bankers draft take a photocopy of that too.

I would take cash any day over a draft. Best thing to do is meet buyer at your bank and deposit cash in your account, no problem with dud notes and no security problem with having a large amount of cash about the house. Genuine buyer will have no problem with this.

thanks for all the replies. that thing about meeting the buyer at the bank seems like a right job, but wud the buyer be offended ? e.g. he gives me the cash and I go to a bank and cash it, he is still without the keys of the car as I wudnt hand over the keys until I cashed the money in the bank

You both go to the bank in the car with the cash, you lodge the cash, you fill out and post off the VLC together, he drops you home. I've done it many times, any decent buyer will understand your concerns and will want you both to be happy.

If dealing in cash definately go to the bank together and lodge it. Forged notes aside you don't want that amount of cash lying around your home especially when someone else who you don't really know (the buyer) is aware of it.

I done that with the last car I sold, I mainly did it to put the girl who was buying the car at ease - even drove out to Celbridge to let her view it and got the train home when she fell in love with it :P

As regards what happens in the few days between you sending the reg cert to Shannon and the ownership changing, type up a short bill of sale for you both to sign (witnessed if anyone else is around too) when you do the deal.

Something marked "Bill of Sale" stating that you, Mr X, sell the car as described (model, colour, mileage), as is, to Mr Y, for the amount xx.

Make sure it's dated. Sign two copies each, one for him, one for you.

    Related question here.

If I'm selling privately what paper work needs to be filled out to complete the change of ownership so that I'm not getting speeding points and parking fines on a car I no longer own !!

Never sold privately before just wondering what the paperwork steps are really

Simple enough. Complete rear of VLC with new owner's details and date of sale and post it off to Shannon once the money is handed over.

I'm sure you have to date the log book when you sign it, which would be all that's really needed.

The back of your VLC has a piece to sign for you and new owner along with their address and you date it, it's then your and only your responsibility to send it to Shannon to get the car registered in buyers name, don't under any circumstances give them the form to send in.

Yeah definitly make sure you send off the form yourself, I was scrapping an old car a few years ago and the fella who was getting it scrapped said he needed the log book to scrap it and then kept the car for himself and got me well over a grand in parking tickets! Ended up having to get the cops involved and luckily didn't have to pay the fines! Oh how young and stupid I was.

The seller is required to send the form to the DOE in Shannon. Don't give to the buyer. Once the change of ownership section is filled in, signed and sent to Shannon they will issue the new owner with a new registration document.
