Interchangeable reg plates

Switzerland has them, Austria has them and Germany is going to get them next year.

The way it is supposed to work is that you get one set of plates for two (or maybe even three) cars.
Tax and insurance would have to be paid for the most expensive of those cars ...the other ones would be "free"
The idea behind it is that people could afford to run another environementaly friendly car for their daily commute while keeping the big family car for weekends/evenings and it is hoped that this measure will have clear green benefits in the long run.

Only one car at the time can be driven, as there is only one set of plates.

Now ...when is this to be introduced here?:D

Don't we have it already? In that if you have a low emission car the road tax is very low. Also I think the insurance in particularly Germany is higher anyway.

What I am saying is that if you had a Legend and an Insight under the current Irish scheme it probably be the same price as this scheme in Germany anyway.

fantastic idea. Would save me having to drive my gas guzzler into work. I would way prefer to drive a little 1 litre runaround for the running around.

As for when we get it here... I wont be holding my breath.

Good idea in theory, of course if you got the cheaper smaller car in the beginning...
But I could see the use for myself as I have a bigger comfy car to drive longer distances and a small for nipping around town.

Its so simple yet would be so effective and convenient that there isn't a hope of it ever happening here.

It would be an excellent introduction for me, allowing me to travel to work from back home efficiently while still having the option to take the proper car when I want.

    Never.

They'd have to change the whole registration system 1st and with our insurers it's difficult to get multi car policies.

Good idea but it will never happen.

You mean the insurance companies would be deprived of the opportunity to screw you royally for having the nerve to own more than one car? How could you ever consider such a thing and deprive the insurance companies of all that illgotten gain? How can you sleep at night etc etc...

It could be done without changing the registrations of cars, maybe have an extra plate to stick in the windscreen with your own number or something separate to the cars registration.

It's far too good of an idea for this country to adapt.

If we do attempt it'll end up in 'development' for a good..oh 4 years at the end of which they'll decide it was a bad idea and say "yeah we're not gonna do it anyway..but that cost €40M in research so.."

Its a great idea imo - but being Ireland, it wouldn't be long before people make up multiple sets of plates and have the whole family driving cars while only paying for insurance on one!

I personally like the idea of penalising usage, rather than the purchase and ownership, of less economical cars.

    Can just see it now
......"sorry garda, I couldn't tax this car as i keep forgetting my numberplate at home on my other car and can't remember the reg of the top of me head"
    :o

I just got quoted EUR400 on a 5.6l BMW 850CSi as a second car with 4k miles per year. My "main" car insurance is through normal means with the usual NCBs and such. Second car policy doesnt really seem affected by NCB and just has its own classic car criteria. "Classic Car" in insurance land is between 13 and 15years old depending on marque.

Admittedly no good for the owner of 2 recent cars though.

Think you missed the point, having the small car first wouldnt change anything, the idea here is multiple vehicles that excel in their respective areas:
    - a commuter car (1 or 2 occupants)
    - and a specific function vehicle (family, 4x4, camping, sports) etc.
