Recording through the USB port will be limited to digital terrestrial TV, not analogue.

It's probably an MPEG2 TV which is no good for Ireland (bar UK Freeview spillover areas), but there might be a chance it's MPEG4.

It's more than likely got a digital tuner. The program guide is a feature of digital tv's and personally I reckon it has a built-in DVR (Digital Video Recorder) but needs external storage for the recordings. Unfortunately, it doesn't state what formats it records or plays back!

I wish I had known this before buying it. Still a great TV though. Have attached a fairly substantial external HDD to it.

I feel a bit stupid that I didn't cop on that I wouldn't be able to record.

Does the tv you bought have an MPEG4 digital tuner built in? it didn't state it on their site. I presume it does since you have attached a HDD to it.
