I've watched some of these- Sarah Jessica Parkers one and Lisa Kudrow's- and they were awful. Really awful. The BBC ones are far far better.

The American version has a preview at the beginning and end of each segment before it cuts to ads (given it's American, there are a lot of these segments) and it's done in the style of "Next, Sarah Jessica uncovers a mystery that will change her family history, forever!".

In fairness, it is interesting that some of them can trace their ancestors back to 1600's but the voiceover and editing style that it's presented in is akin to Hells Kitchen US.

I really enjoyed the UK one. America usually 'dumbs down' these shows and they are terrible, almost lose the documentary style and become fiction due to all the editing.

    I'll still check it out.

How can you not get into the UK version? :S

The Ainsley Harriet episode is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. :pac:

Haven't seen that one. The Jerry Springer episode is excellent as well. Definitely track down the Ainsley Harriet episode, I don't know if you'll find it funny like I did but it is a great little bit of TV. The Nicky Campbell episode is good too. Hmmm, actually I've hugely enjoyed most every episode I've seen. :P

This is not a patch on the UK version, the yanks have dumbed it down and coated it in sugar. On the Uk one I would really recommend the Jerry Springer, Natasha Kiplinksy and Kim Catrall.

Who is that doing the voiceover? Is he Irish?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

I suspect they have re-dubbed the narration with an Irish actor.

Have to agree, the Kim Catrall episode was excellent.

Don't let SJP hear you say that...Don't they both allegedly "hate" each other?!

I really like the UK version of the show but this one was just horrible. The tacky music, the incessant recaps, her continually saying WOW AMAZING OH MY GOD! Ugh. Won't be watching it again. Or will to complain bitterly all the way through :-p

I decided to watch it today and it took a hell of a time, even on fast forward, to get through the ads. Edit: the break was actually 5.75 minutes!

I hope that RTE didn't spend too much money on it, because it was unwatchable, for all of the reasons above. Each time a new fact emerged, it was like the moment in Pimp My Ride when the person sees their refurbished car for the first time.
