    My weekly thread :D...

Right, are you a Sophisticated male?
How do you define what makes you sophisticated?

I think to a degree its a gentlmanly trait, knowing things about wine cigars, alchaol food, fasion life style. In away it can be seen as snoberey in away it can make a guy look like hes a no it all. But in other ways it can be very impressive.

    Are you?

Me sophisticated? No. I wear cheap, comfortable clothes, I smoke, shave irregularly, spend a lot of time watching TV and sports.

The fact that my friends all refer to me (at various times) as 'the yuppie', 'overdressed', 'the forty year old' (I'm only 21!!!:o) and so on, makes me think that I'm over-sophisticated for my age, but probably not in the same league as someone who has a good bit more life experience than me.

I get called the exact same thing. I'm only 26, and a student, but dont' dress like one nor do i have anything really in common with other students - different taste in fashion, music, beer & wine, etc.

    I wouldn't say i'm sophisticated but i like to think i'm cultured.

Lol Snowy, where do you come up with these threads?

I wouldn't class myself as sophisticated. In fact I'm a bit like Bounderby in 'Hard Times'. I revel in my plain upbringing and being a common man.

Note: Bounderby didn't actually have a plain upbringing, nor was he a common man. He just liked to give the impression that he did.

I don't know how he does it, the man is absolutely incredible!

I don't really know what qualifies as 'sophisticated'. I don't drink or smoke so I don't know anything about drink or cigars. In terms of fashion sense I don't really have one. All of my clothes are a bit old and supposedly not great looking. They're comfortable all the same.

Don't really groom myself. I don't grow facial hair very fast so shaving really doesn't feel routine enough for me to bother.

My lifestyle consists of being lazy. It's OK, I'm a student. :pac:

I think you become more sophicticated as you age. I associate it with being wise, knowledgeable and knowing how the world works. It is not necessarily about wearing expensive clothes or having expensive tastes as anybody with money can have those. What is importnat is to know what is real and to enjoy it because of this.

I think sophistication is the mix of being educated in the arts and sciences combined with life experience.

Im not sure it has anything to do with wines or cigars, more about being cultured, well travelled, highly educated etc.

(Id say Im half way there)

Its about how many aftershaves you've got and how you wolf down your smoked salmon. :p

Oh and not owning those things in your last weekly thread

Well I'm reasonably well educated, well travelled and well read but I wouldn't class myself as sophisticated.

But then again others might.....I suppose it's down to how others view you rather than how you view yourself.

If it's about clothes I'm screwed. Only lepers walk around in jackets or turtlenecks all the time.

If it's about opera and speaking foreign languages and appreciating Miles Davis then awesome.

I like to think I'm somewhat sophisticated. I'm mature, intelligent, empathic and I strive not to be ignorant. It's not about drinking cognac or wearing tweed blazers, it's about treating yourself, others and the world with respect and dignity.

You can't be sophisticated without a monocle

Not eating peas with a knife comes in there somewhere and you cant be sophisticated if you don't put the toilet seat back in the upright position when finished.

Sophistication is.....fine living within your means. We can't all wear Armani suits, Patek Phillippe's or drive Bentley's. ;)

It is being a mature gentleman with a complete lack of pretence.

It's about being well informed, being mannerly, acting your age and also dressing it.

A sophisticated 21 year old will not be the same as a 50 year old.

For example, instead of going out and having 4-5 pints you could have a 'nice' bottle of wine instead.

Another example is instead of wasting money on another holiday, you could spend the same money on a fine watch that lasts a lifetime.

    It's a simple equation

if you drink copious amounts of wine instead of copious amounts of beer you have become sophisticated, congratulations (does not apply if you are homeless and/or drink from the bottle)

Memories last a lifetime too. ;) I'd much rather have a good holiday than a good watch, given the choice between the two.
