    Brilliant...i love it.:D

lets clarify the question-if you had to join one of these clubs based on playing experience, which would you choose?

we'll keep the cheese question for another day....

mitchelstown........if I had to pick either of those 2

charleville is a very short track of what i remember a half set would nearly do you, saying that didn't ever play the new 9 so maybe open to correction as for mitchelstown played a cup there once and it was an ok track

Mitchelstown is in top nick at the moment. Played it last week and it is playing sweet

I'd choose Charleville, also in great nick and great variety with the 27 holes

I was going to say Charleville but when I think about it Mitchelstown has quite a few good holes. 6-9 were a disaster last time I played there and the long walk to the 6th is a PITA.

Haven't played Mitchelstown since it was presented in a disgraceful condition for the JSC a couple of years ago so maybe it has improved.

To add something to my post above.

There are a few things I don't like about Mitchelstown -
the walk to the new holes is annoying,
on the new holes it feels like you are playing a completely different (and poorer) course,
there is internal OOB on a few holes which I hate,
and finally that uphill Par 3 on the back 9 is a joke of a hole IMO.

I haven't played Charleville in a while but it has the advantage of the extra 9 holes meaning it is more likely to have more holes open all year round.
I don't think much of the new holes in Charleville either but I expect they normally use the original layout (I may be wrong on this though).

Played it last tuesday and the new holes are certainly not in top nick. The fairways are on 6, 7, 8, and 10 are sanded like you wouldn't believe. A half an inch of sand on there. Strange for this time of the year. In fairness the original holes are fine and the greens are good enough.

The greens in Charleville are a disgrace at the moment. I think someone fcukd up spraying them some time back. Too strong a concentration of some mix was used and more or less killed the grass on 4 or 5 greens. The fairways are lovely there though. If i was to pick one I'd pick Charleville because while the greens are poor at the moment, it is rare for them to be poor there. A good deal to be had there at the moment too.

I'm a member in Charleville. It is a great club if you want a few quiet holes because you will always have 9 extra holes to play casually. It's unfortunate that some of the greens are kinda dead...and probably wont be in action until next year. It's a fairly short course, but it's tight and puts up a challenge. The greens are usually in great nick in the Summer, but they often go to pot in the winter, although the new course greens are nice all the time.

Must have been done early Tuesday as they were sweet on Monday. Have never played Charleville so cant comment on it but i would wonder what both courses are like during the winter. I know Mitchelstown can be very soft under foot.

Thanks for the replies to this.
i had played mitchelstown before but played charleville for the first time today-boy is it tight.I struggled with my driver which didn't make the job any easier.Have to say that the fairways were in top condition but 3 or 4 of the greens were poor enough-and whats with the dog-legs.u wouldn't get that many down the dogs home.

Overall i do think that this is a thinking mans track which if played regularly would improve ur game.it certainly would bring variety to ur game anyway.

I wont be negative about it-i don't like to put a place down because i didn't like it or vice versa if i do-Horses for courses n all that.i will say this though-u need to be accurate off the tee to shoot a score or it could be a long day.
I enjoyed the day and will weigh up what to do.Thanks guys:)

Must have been so Jimmy. A drop of rain would probably speed up the process too id say.

One of my best rounds ever there was with no woods! :)

I'd go with Mitchelstown even though some of the greens are rough, the new 6 seem to have better greens though.
Like Charleville too in that it's tight and unforgiving-trees trees tress.
