1997 VW Polo - Query

    Hi there
Before I begin, I know NOTHING about cars so am just looking for a simple answer to this really but thanks in advance to anyone who tries to explain it to me. Have a 1997 Polo which has a mileage of over 120k miles on it. Bought it from a friend for next to nothing and have been happy enough with it. Recently, I noticed that it wasn't heating to the halfway point on the dial, but everything else was fine. Then it died completely, had to get a new battery, no worries. So, today took it out and it started going over the halfway point on the dial i.e. seemed to be overheating. Had added water before I started the journey. I think there may be a problem with the fan as when I was collecting the car after getting the battery, they did mention that it will need to be replaced soon. Basically, I suppose my question is, how much would it be to replace the fan, is it definitely the fan causing the problem and is it worth replacing it? Don't intend to hang onto the car for too much longer.

When your driving the car on an open road does the temp guage stay

near the bottom. Does the temp rise when your stuff in traffic,

if so it sound very much like your fan or maybe thermostat is the

problem. Get your local friendly mechanic to check, not an exspensive

fix. Maybe ring a few of them for a price.

I'd be interested to know how much coolant vs water is in the coolant tank. Could probably do with a flush, termostat would be worth looking at as said above.

Firstly the temp gauge should be at half way or slightly below it so your thermostat is good anyway.Secondly check to see if your coolant is being lost as Polos suffer from waterpump problems ive changed enough of them !!
Next time it gets to half way leave it running in the yard and put the bonnet up and make sure you hear the fan coming on
