    Hi Guys

I'm looking to setup a FTA dish, but I'm looking for the best set up, probably cheapest too. My wife wants me to get some french channels, is this possible? I'd also like to have 7day EPG.
As it stands at the moment, I have no equipment, no old Sky dish or anything like that.

Can anyone help me out here with some advice. My budget is only about €150.

    Cheers
    Nabber.

If you want French channels you will need to receive the signal from Astra 19.2E or Hotbird 13E. You will not receive the french national channels such as TF1, France 2 etc (unless you go for a subscription service). You will receive TV5, France 24 & BFM (the latter two being news channels) and a few others (Demain/Direct 8/KTO (religious)). Some programmes on Canal Plus are broadcast in the clear, although most are scrambled.

A drawback for you might be that, unless you go for a system that allows you to receive multiple satellites (motorised or multiple LNB's), and which would require a higher outlay, you will receive very few english language channels.

You can check www.ses-astra.com for available channels.

If you require supply and installation of a system you would be looking at an outlay of around €250 to €300.

Your budget of €150 is probably to low for receiver, dish and install.

The various French options in addition to the last post are TNT Sat, Fransat and BIS but would break your budget.

Fransat - the french freesat. Encrypted, receiver and card come in the one package, card not available seperately, carries the french DTT channels.

Thanks for the help so far guys

What do you guys reckon would be reasonable price to pay?
I'm not mad into sats so I just really wanna watch TV, no interest in recording or conecting it to any other system I have at home.

    Thanks so far guys.

I was sure that some of the main ones were unencrypted on 5 or 8 west. Will check it out this evening.

    Try this outfit https://www.eirss.ie/online_shop/packages_and_kits.html

(Not connected to them in anyway) - basic equipment is €99 DIY, or €179 installed.

For a self install, the B&Q one is cheaper and is HD too. The 60cm dish in either package wouldn't be big enough for the French channels as well as 28.2 though??

Here is a list of the Free French channels on satellite and their respective sat positions. http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/France.html

Do you want English channels as well for that from Astra 28.2?

If so you will also need a 70/80cm dish two lnbs and a "Televes Extra LNB Bracket German Astra 19.2 and 28.2" - about €16 for the bracket.

For your budget - second hand ebay diseq sat receivers or adverts.ie.

You'll also have to install it yourself (satellite dishes dont have to be mounted on roofs all the time).

I'd like to mount it on my shed. Do I just need an unobstructed view of the SAT I am trying to receive the signal from?

It all sounds complex to me. 80cm dish might be a bit to big to put up on the house.

Its not complicated. Its a couple of hours and patience. There are plenty of videos describing how to set one up.

Go to dishpointer.com. Pick the satellite that you want to recive. Use the google map to find your house and it will show you the direction the dish should be pointing in and the height an obstacle would have to be in order to prevent reception.

By shed do you mean wooden shed ? Ultimately you want to bolt it to something that doesnt move ven slightly like a wall. I have installed dishes 4 feet off the ground off a wall. The signal travels thousands of miles so it takes a fairly near and large object to obstruct it.
