Finding out the owner of a property

Who should I contact to find out the registered owner of a house?

And is there a definitive single document which has the property owner's signature on it? (e.g. the deeds, or a signed entry in the land register, or something else?)

Check maps in PRA. If title registered in PRA you can get folio number which in turn gives you the registered owner.

Some property e.g. in the centre of towns and a very small number of rural properties are not registered in the PRA. You then have to search in Registry of Deeds against name of last known owner as R of Deeds while running since 1704 or so did not record maps.

You may also send a map to Valuation Office who will supply, for a fee, names of rated occupiers as far back as you want to first valuation of property - property valuation ( "Griffiths valuation " ) started in 1852. Different start dates in various counties.

Also in the case of property not registered in the PRA solicitors practising in the area or the agent for the local landlord if still around may be able to help. E.g a number of houses along one street may have been originally held under one lease from the the local estate and later subdivided.

    Enjoy. Good luck.

Thanks very much for the reply. It's not very exciting - I'm trying to find out if I'm the registered owner of a house, or if it's my mother - It's complicated...
