Wondering what peoples opinions are on this. The stock browser seems to display loads of Vodafone icons on me so want to change it. I've heard Dolphin and Opera are good?

I like the stock HTC browser, it does everything I need.

    Vodafone branding -

    Check you data plan first.

Cheers. Have a €10 1GB data addon with Vodafone Simply. Do you know if that would be ok?

I'm pretty sure that covers the HS, ISP and Live APNs, but wouldn't harm to check here -

EDIT: I'm wrong, read on below.

Dolphin and xScope are decent. Opera kind of sucks. Still find the stock browser best overall.

Do any of the other browsers do the text reformatting to screen that HTC Sense does for the browser?

No it would not be ok, I am on the same plan, but the good news is there is a cure, you just need to remove the proxy from the live APN and the Vodafone banners top and bottom are gone forever!

Are you sure? I had that add-on when I was with Vodafone and often used the HS APN tethered to my netbook.

    EDIT: Removing the proxy -

I rang them up and asked them which APNs could be used with the 9.99 1GB "mobile internet addon", which is badly named I agree, but they said it only allows access to the live APN, and simply removing the proxy gets rid of the banners, so once I had that sorted I was happy.

    I must have had a different 1gig add-on, cheers.

Just to ask / confirm with you

are you using these browsers on a Sense enabled device or something like a Nexus one

i just get the feeling it might be built into the base browser rendering on sense items and thus might apply to all browsers

As mentioned above, it does for Dolphin HD.

As said above, Is Dolphin HD being used on a HTC device that comes with Sense as i believe that the Sense addition modify's the rendering engine which i think all the browsers make use of on the phone

I've been using an alpha release of Fennec (Firefox mobile browser) on my desire, its buggy but the best browser i've used yet for android

Does this work on the N1? I tried it and got a blank screen. rebooted and nothing blank screen again:(

Discovered I had not got the latest and greatest! working a dream now. really like the way they have done tabbed browsing to save screen space. that was the one thing I dislike about dolphin HD, too much of screen was unused for browsing.

    Just been using Dolphin HD

its starting to grow on me, its not as simple as the stock browser but tabbed browsing is nice. Bookmarks to SD plugin is brilliant, i can now completely backup my bookmarks and also sync them from Dolphin to the Stock browser which is an amazing addition

Organising bookmarks is another nice addition. i dont care how many times i visit, sometimes you just want order in your bookmarks, i get them here

The text formatting is in here too, though im sense enabled so i'd love to know if its the browser thats doing it or the base sense modifications

This is on Villain 6.00 which is a massive improvement over 5.5

I'm using Dolphin HD on an N1 and the way it works is that you pinch zoom to the level you want and the text remains in the same format but then double tap and it wraps the text to fit to the screen..

Only issue is that when you zoom in too far and there are long words they dont split and wrap, so you have to scroll across but i don't tend to need to read that big a font so i'm happy with it..

Is the text wrap automatic on the desire or is it the same method?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,182 ✭✭✭dionsiseire

Im on a Hero using Villain but i zoom in and give it about 2-3 seconds and it automatically wraps the text

I liked the dolphin hd on desipre but I had to uninstall it in the end because if an issue.

If I was on boards mobile and typed in a reply and hit the post reply button it wouldn't post it, it was like the button was inactive. Happens on stock browser for me too the odd time but far less frequently so I went back to that.

    Anyone else notice that problem?

I've been using Opera Mini 5 beta for Android for a while now and find it better than stock and dolphin.
The Web has never been so fast on your phone. Opera’s streamlined rendering engine and server-side compression allows Opera to load Web pages much more quickly than other mobile phone browsers. Features, such as the address bar, shortcut keys and touchscreen control, save you time and effort when performing basic tasks, such as entering addresses or scrolling rapidly through pages.

With the server-side compression it could potentially save your kb's though I've no proof as I've never tested it.
