Would a world cup style boxing tournament be feasible?

    ...in pro boxing.

So with Haye seemingly avoiding fighting the Klitschko's and the whole Mayweather - Pacqiauo thing, aswell as all the other fights that never seem to happen, do you think a world championship for pro boxing could work? Like if once every four years, there was a tournament held where the top ranked 8or 16 boxers at a given date before the tournament in each division squared off against each other in a knockout style competition. With quarter finals, semi's and a final decider between the two remaining fighters, type thing. Obviously it would have to last for a few months or so, as you couldn't have fighters fighting three times in a few weeks like in the amateurs.

I can see a few problems with it but would there be any hope of it working? It would return boxing to the popularity it enjoyed in the 70's in my opinion.

I mean imagine this for a quarter final round up taking place over a weekend or two:
    1. Cotto vs Mayweather
    2. Abregu vs Clottey
    3. Castillo vs Pacqiuao
    4. Juddah vs Mosley

:winners going through to the semi's and then a big Pac-Mayweather showdown in the final. Would be class. Fighters could duck an opponent for a little while but ultimately they are going to either have to lose to someone else or face them at some stage if they make it all the way.

You mean like the super 6 super middleweight competition that's going on over the last year or so?

Maybe the "big 4" wbo, wbc, wba, ibf could have their champs fight off every few years. It would never work out the way we'd want it but the more competitive tournaments the better.
I wonder would team tournaments work well? Eg:

    Ireland
    England
    Wales
    Scotland
    France
    Spain
    Russia
    USA

You could have a whole card based on one team vs another.

    2 groups:

    a

    Ireland
    wales
    russia
    usa

    b

    scotland
    england
    spain
    france

2 teams go through to the semis. winner of group a fights runners up of group b, winners of b vs runners up of a.

    Then the final.

    Weight divisions:

    Bantam
    Feather
    Light
    Welter
    Middle
    Light heavy
    Heavy

Not really a world cup but it would have appeal imo and 7 fights leave room for another fight or two on the card as well.
