Multi-car insurance

    Hi All,

Can anyone tell me who does multi car insurance?
I have to use two cars to get to and from work. Over the course of the year my main car would do approx 20k miles and the other car approx 3K miles, it is really just a run-about-car.

Currently I have the cars insured as seperate polices with the same insurance company but the cost of insuring the second car is more expensive than the main car as I cannot transfer the no claims bonus from one to the other.

Is there any other way of insuring the cars than the way I am now?

    Cheers,

Best to talk to your insurance (or others).

I've got the same problem, which means, I'm going to negotiate something similar on next renewal. Currently my no claims from the one car is accounted as driver experience on the other, however I've been told by somebody, that he negotiated a special deal with 123.ie on the basis, that he was the only driver of the cars and thus only ever one of them would be on the road.

Ya looks like I better talk to a few of the insurance companies. I was with Quinn (3 years ago) but they would only insure me on one car so I moved to axa and they insured me on both car but I could only apply my no claims bonus to my main car, as a result my insurnace on a 1.3L 1995 toyota starlet (worth €400) is more expensive than a '05 BMW.

Is it possible to insure one car with one company and the other with another?

How can it be done for people that own a number of cars?

You can insure as many cars with as many diferent insurance companies as you want, problem is, you need to earn a bonus for each one. There is a company who only sell through brokers, called Setanta, who can mirror a bonus, so you can have a full NCB on both cars.

I'm with Quinn currently. They are the ones, that are mirroring my noclaims from the one car as driving experience to the other.

And yes, you can have as many cars with as many insurances as you want, but each car has to earn their own noclaims individually. A multi-car agreement probably makes more sense.

Another one would be a company insurance policy (can be done as sole trader, don't need ltd.), but I don't think it'll work out cheaper.

you might get classic insurance on a 95 car, as low as 150euro for basic cover.

Yep, but only, if it's your secondary car.

You could also get fleet insurance, but in most cases (and with Quinn) you need a minimum of 5 vehicles on the policy. No claims bonus isn't an issue.

This seems an interesting option but is it possible to get classic cover on a car only 15 years old?

Most insurances require 20 years of age for classic insurance, some may let you get away with 15 years, but why did you think a 13 year old car would get away with classic insurance ?

I presume, it'd all have to be legit though, registering for tax, etc.

I was talking to my broker yesterday. She was telling me that its pretty much only classic policies that offer multi-car insurance. I have two seperate policies for three cars. Its a pain :(

I have one car insured with RSA and they would not mirror my no claims bonus on another car I was thinking of buying. I checked around and yesterday I insured the second car and got my full no claims discount mirrored to the second car as well.

I did it through a broker in Waterford called Oliver Murphy. The insurance company he used is Setanta. The price for fully comp on a 1.6 Mazda MX5 was €410. All I have to do is supply a copy of my active no claims discount which the insurance company for my first car is supplying me with.
