So traveling my laptop gives me about a movies worth of battery life. Ah the days when this battery would give me almost two movies.

Im wondering is there any free strip down operating system which allows nothing more than the ability to view video files.

    http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

I wouldn't dream of putting anything else on a laptop, no anti-virus scans, no spyware, no defragging, no deleting temp files, no slowdowns and just works

If you are looking for an OS that will allow you to view videos while giving you a significantly longer battery life than your current OS (presumeably Windows?) then the answer is no.

Windows has very good power management and most linux distros will actually offer worse battery life.

    TinyXP or Ubuntu.

It may be worth investing in something specific if you travel alot:

I've an acer aspire one netbook (€200) with a nine cell battery (€45) that gets me 7 hours of battery when watching movies. Tiny XP is installed with no overheads like AV etc (there is not a lot on it so reinstalling windows is not an issue if the need arises)
