One thing that is driving me mad is why did Richard visit locke when he was a child. He presented Locke with a number of objects and asked him which was his. Locke picked a knife. He was also drawing a picture of what appeared to be the smoke monster.

Can anyone explain this to me?:confused:

He went to visit Locke because during the time jumps adult Locke told him that in the future he would appoint Locke as the leader. The stuff he laid out appeared to be a way of identifying if Locke was who he claimed to be, or maybe a way of assessing the personality. It wasn't expanded on, and didn't really need to be for the purposes of the overall story, it was just a way of explaining why Richard took an interest in Locke but hadn't brought him to the island sooner.

Locke was supposed to pick the compass, which is stuck in a time loop of passing between Locke and Richard.

Richard thinks Locke is there new leader because Locke tells him so in a Time jump to the 50s? Sooo Richard seeks out child Locke and watches over his development.

was it not Broyles from Fringe that give him the choices?

    Broyles the Black guy?

If so then he meet Locke in hospital after he broke his back and suggested that Locke go on a Walkabout, which lead to him going to Australia.

He also chaperoned Locke when he was Jeremy Bentham.

I personally saw it as richard had sought out locke in his timeline (the 50's) after locke appeared to richard on the island, think about it richard would want to find young locke to see if he was special and indeed the true leader to be, when locke did not pick put the compass richard dismissed the idea until meeting locke years later

Like if you think from richards perspective, if locke was special say like walt he would have picked out the compass knowing what would come to pass in the future
