Returning from australia- advice needed

My brother is returning from australia in the next week. He has been abroad for approximately 16 months. Prior to leaving he had been in employment for several years with all PRSI, PAYE, etc payed. He intends to begin looking for work immediately when he returns and is hopeful that will be able to get a job (he works in science so maybe still some jobs). However even if successful that will take weeks if not months for him.
My query is what are his entitlements?
Should/ can he register for social welfare in case it takes a long time or even in case he is'nt able to get work?

Any advice is appreciated or similar experiences???

    Hi

Well i was in a similar situation i came home from new zealand having been away for 2 years and i also had several years working here before i went, i went into SW office when i came back with my P45 from my last job in ireland and also they wanted to see my passport stamps just to prove that i was away, i had no problems getting JSB and had it after 2 weeks but this was very quick so obviously it varies from office to office, that was 9 months ago

    Hope this helps
