Guys youre going to love this one....

Just got an email back from a company involved in the stocktaking business. They obviously hadnt even read my CV (employed a little trick I use in my application to know if my CVs been read). They then had the nerve to congratulate me on succeeding to the next round. Now here's the best bit, I have to ring them up and speak to an answering machine for 2 minutes to convince them Im the best for the job, before this friday. (if somebody wants to impersonate me, just PM me for details...I'll give you the first weeks salary ;))
OK its a matter of personal opinion, but that to me is just plain insulting and humiliating. The sad part is they probably havent got enough tape or digital space to record all the interested parties. Shame coz with all that talent out there, there is just no excuse for not getting (or at least endeavouring to get) the best person for the job. It just goes to show that in times when it is most needed, selection criteria goes down the drain.
This for me is the last straw, Im not going to drop down to that level. I'll walk away without a job, but with my dignity.

Getting really tired of the whole show now...

sorry I thought it was obvious, well its starts with receiving "congratulations" with my CV not even being read and ends with having to put on a 2 minute talk show to impress. Surely it would be more professional to phone people and ask them the relevant questions. Its making a joke out of the recruitment process. Personally I think its a new low.
Without wanting to name and blame, I'll just say the jobs not in sales (nor radio), and requires mental arithmetic, so the Terry Wogans that they get probably wont help much.

I'd love to know your trick for knowing if the CV has been read or not. Intrigued!

Will part of the job involve leaving a lot of messages on answering machines or trying to convince people to do things over the phone?

Damn it again. I hate these threads that suggest its going to be something benifical and it turns out to be a rant. I too wish to avail me this magic e mail signal.

maybe they were testing your ability to follow a simple instruction?

I to would like to know this email trick that we can only presume is not read receipts/delivery reports! I feel we may all be disappointed;)

are you not going to share how you know if your cv was read or not?

OP, Is your secret having the recipient issue you with a Read Receipt after they supposedly read your email? (ergo supposedly having read your CV also)

First thing that pops to mind is it's a scam, you could well end up ringing a premium rate number even without realising. Did you apply to the company directly? Either that or it's somebody having a laugh, whatever about a telphone interview I can see absolutely no reason why you would need to leave a recorded "audition"

At a guess, I'd say its something like putting an instruction to download a tiny image (1 pixel x 1 pixel or invisible) into the CV which is probably in Word doc format.

If the image to be downloaded into the doc is located on the Internet on a website you control, you can then watch your web logs to see if the image has been requested, which effectively indicates the doc was opened.

Doesn't indicate it was read, mind you :D

Stuff along this lines is often used for monitoring 'open' rates on email newsletters, tracking other web usage, but the OP may clarify...

Edit: Or if its something more common sense, add a line buried in the CV reading "You've won one hundred euro - email me to arrange collection" ;-)

    Are you serious?

This is a disgraceful, unprofessional way to operate. What next - complete a tie-breaker when they can't decide between two similarly qualified candidates?

It's quite possible that this is a screening procedure. It's not much different to the screening questions used in job ads.

What exactly is the problem? Employers in this market can sometimes get hundreds of applicants for a position, they can't possibly speak to them all so they have to use techniques to short list.

Would you prefer if they just didn't bother to respond at all?

Hey guys i sent a cv to the above company and guess what i have been successful i have got to the first round of interviews .i have to ring a premium number and talk for two minutes .and if successful i will be going to the next level . having read the above comments this does look like a scam ...another scam out there is the job of advanced driving instructor which appears on jobs .ie regularly when you send your cv in they contact you and call you to meet them and you first have to pay 140 euros for a driving assessment and then they tell you to go off and think about it ,you never reach the interview stage and the lessons are ongoing for about three months at a reduced rate of 50 percent and after all that if you pass they might have a job .

If you have to ring a premium phone number then be assured its a scam - any application that involves expense ( other than transport to/from interview etc ) and paying upfront to the company should be viewed as a scam.

No reputable company is going to use a Premium Number with an automated answering machine for recruitment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭freeze4real

That job is synergy stock taking.

I got the same email and i wasn't arsed.

Got asked to do the exact same thing for a social care job (leave a 2 min voice-mail convincing them that your the right person for the job)....seems like a strange recruitment procedure and very offputting!
