Right, i think he deserves his own thread. One consistently fantastic part of Lost, over the 6 seasons, has been the music.

Locked Out Again - Played when Locke finds out that his father has conned him. It was probably the finest, and most fitting, piece of music in the entire show.

Oceanic 816 Montage - Fantastic piano piece played in the finale of season 1, when they are boarding the plane.

Win One For The Reaper - One of the saddest pieces, played (iirc) when Boone died in season 1.

Hurley's Handouts - The guitar version of one of the main themes, played in season 2 when Hurley is giving out all the Dharma food.

There's also so many more fantastic tracks, which i'm sure i'll be listening for a long time.

I was discussing this with the girlfriend last night and we both reckon that his contribution to the show was as big as any writer / producer or cast member. Some of the recurring motifs and themes are just amazing. They really evoke a strong emotion. I think music students will be studying some of this work in years to come (if they aren't already).

Oh my God, was at work today, and on the start of the Ray Foley show on Today FM, they played "Win one for the reaper". I had to go hide in a corner to hide my tears.

M.G. is such a legend, every piece of music is just so emotionally charged

The song that played in the final scene as they were sitting in the church was beautiful. I believe that was a new arrangement of one of the songs. Hopefully it gets a release on the next soundtrack.

The recurring "remembering/awakening/whatever" theme throughout the finale was absolutely beautiful.

    Brilliant thread.

I thought it was great when Hurley was listening to Delicate by Damien Rice in the first season on the beach. It was very touching for the time.

I thought there was nothing new in the finale which is slightly disappointing especially when last years delivered so much. All the old tracks were basically remixed, nothing new although I don't remember the theme in the church off hand so have to look at that again.

But overall, he was as integral as any writer or actor to the show. It would have been nowhere as good without him. Just try to imagine any of the really seminal moments without his music; it's just impossible.

Nobody has come close musically speaking in any tv or film imo. I know lots will say BSG but for whatever reason that never did it for me. I hope he has much success in his future.

"Win One For The Reaper" is amazing.

This show wouldnt have been the success it was without Giacchino's music. He purposely went out of his way to mix contemporary instruments with crazy ideas like using bits of a plane for sound.

In a league of his own and someday will be looked on in the same vein as Zimmer, Elfman etc

I would not have noticed if he had been replaced by a cat with a keyboard, in all honesty. For me the score was completely irrelevant to the series.

Anybody got any idea of the release date for the soundtrack to season 6? I really want the music of the final scene to be played in the church when I get married. Is that insane? Yes, quite possibly, but its so beautiful...
LOVE that hurley's handouts tune. Will be getting that for sure...

The music from the final episode has been playing in my head, literally constantly, since Monday morning when I watched it. Along with the final scene.

I think I actually need help.

100% agreed. It made the show. Listening to Win One For the Reaper and it's hard not to get emotional over it.

His work in the Star Trek movie last year was also top notch.

Actually, does anyone who has all/any of the lost soundtracks know of any other "positive" sounding tracks like the Hurley one above? Just incase season 6 doesn't come out before the wedding I might be able to use some tracks from seasons 1-5. I can't afford to go out and buy them all though just on the off-chance I'll find something right. Anyone got any suggestions?

Same for me. I found a clip of it here (Warning - spoils the final scene for those who haven't seen it):

I particularly love the bit from about 3:30. I think this is a modified version of Win One for the Reaper. I really hope this gets a release.

Yes, have to agree absolutly loved the music throughout Lost. When the sub sank a few weeks back and
    Jin and Sun
died, although I hadn't much sentiment toward either character the music accompanying their death scene had me welling up. And then Hurley cried and that was it for me.

Well the last few soundtracks have been released around May but obviously that will be different this time. I imagine it will get released around the time the DVD comes out in August or before Christmas.

This is a slight variation of 'There's No Place Like Home' from the Season 4 soundtrack, and probably my favourite from the whole show:

    My two other favourites are:

    'Lying For The Island':

And for something a bit more lively, 'Bobbing For Freighters'

Actually it was only when I went searching that I remembered that all three are on the Season 4 soundtrack. It's epic.

Yeah. I do a best of Lost playlist to filter everything down from the 5 soundtracks and season 4 has the most songs despite containing the fewest episodes. It also contained my favourite version of Life and death in Ji Yeon; the way it's mixed with Sun and Jins music is absolutely beautiful.

**Spoiler warning - here be spoilers. Do not read unless you've seen all of LOST or don't care about spoilers**

In my opinion, LOST wouldn't have had such an impact on me without Giacchino. Iconic scenes such as Desmond making contact with Penny in 'The Constant', Charlie's Death, Jin & Sun's death; They all had fantastic music, ones that really made it hard to resist the urge to shed a tear. I recall for Charlie's death I was all welled up and my sister was in floods of tears (she really loved the Charlie/Hurley friendship and Charlie/Claire relationship). We agree this probably wouldn't have happened had that music not been so poignant.

Speaking of music and scenes going hand in hand, the music for the last 10 minutes of The End was perfect. The removal of the trademark harsh 'dong' sound for the LOST blackout screen at the end in favour of a more subtle bit from 'There's no place like home' really impacted on me that this really was the end. Thinking about it now nearly makes me misty eyed. I'm not even talking about the Christian/Jack, Jack & Co. or Jack dying bits..but if I was I'd nearly collapse with emotion, Giacchino was an absolute credit to the show and I couldn't agree more with the positive points on this thread.

I'm considering buying the soundtracks along with the BluRay boxset, just to support Michael and show how much I appreciate what he gave to LOST ..truly fantastic and perhaps undervalued by a lot of people.

Win One for the Reaper is a variation of 'Life and Death'. It's got a faster tempo, I much prefer Life and Death

I also can't believe nobody apart from the OP has mentioned Locke'd Out Again - What a haunting tune. The buildup is immense, the emotion is as raw as it gets, and the music is just..wow! From 1:45 on is amazing. Right up there in my top 3.

Every piece posted on this entire thread reminds me of a particular scene. I woke up after 'The End' to Life and Death which was stuck in my head from the final scene. Even now, I can hum most of the songs and I can't get them out of my head. It's yet another thing (in a long list of things) I will miss so much now that LOST is done

    ** Spoiler Warning for Season 4 **

Now that it's not stupid o'clock I've bothered to find The Constant. One of my top five scenes ever. The music is touching.

The music was certainly good but I found it perhaps overused, or too bombastic or something. Basically every few mins you had these huge, sweeping scores telling you "This is a happy Scene", "This is a sad Scene", "This is an exciting scene", and so on.

It felt kind of patronising after a while, like I needed to be told what to feel at a particular time, all the time. Don't lynch me for this opinion - I do like the music, just it's use I'd question.
