    Hi everyone

I was thinking of trying hypnotherapy for my self confidence, self esteem and shyness issues.

Has anyone ever tried this and what were the results.

Can anyone recommend a hypnotherapist? (Dublin area)

    Thanks

I got Paul Mc Kenna's books Instant Confidence and Change your Life in 7 Days.

Have to say I found both of them excellent!!! They really helped me gain confidencene and overcome shyness in alot of situations!

Might be wortha try before going to Hypnotist.

    best of luck!!

I used hypnotherapy about 2 years ago to treat the same problems. I searched the internet for the most professional looking 'therapist' and then went to about 9 or 10 sessions with the guy. this probably cost me around 800 euro in the process. I was desperate to solve my problems so I was willing to give anything a shot.

all I can say is what a complete waste of money it was! the guy seemed genuine. I'm not the kinda person who falls easy for con-artists so I was confident it would work. of course it didn't work which left me down a lot of money. it also hurt me emotionally as I'm still pissed off this jerk is out there conning others.

the thing is there was no signs it was a con. I mean the guy had a very professional looking website, recommendations from people who had attended previously and he is affiliated with a worldwide hypnotherapy association.

however, after the therapy didn't work and he was beginning to drag out the sessions, I began to dig a little bit deeper on the net to see if other people had similar experiences. I found quite a few stories exactly the same as mine. and had the same ending.

the truth is hypnotherapy can be helpful to some people for treatment of phobias and quitting smoking, etc. However, for deeper issues like self-esteem, confidence and shyness, it has little or no effect. I figured this out the hard way! if it's too good to be true than it probably is!!!!. before anyone tries hypnotherapy to solve a problem they have, they should see if there is any scientific research to prove that it works. I mean if it is so good, then everyone would be going to them to solve all their problems.

I presume your curious op on how I eventually tackled my problems. I discovered a scientifically proven therapy that has been used to treat my issues. It's called CBT - cognitive behavioural therapy. Check it out. It is highly recommended by organisations such as the NHS of the UK and IHS to treat your problems and it works, cos I've made major progress in overcoming them. I'm not 100% there yet but I know it's only a matter of time!

are you shy/lacking self confidence in all areas of your life?
just trying to get a bigger picture!
Ive heard of someone who went to a hypnotherapist on baggot street for such issues and found it great.

I'm not sure that hypnotherapy is the answer. Have you spoken to your GP to see what sort of therapy might suit you?

I've heard good things about CBT, but again it may not be suitable for every situation.

going unreg/anon to make this post.

I was thinking about going to see a counsellor/my gp about helping me to gain some self-confidence, self-esteem and get over my shyness issues.

would it be better for me to go to a counsellor or buy a book(s) on these issues?

I have had these issues all my life along with some other issues so personally I fell a counsellor/my gp is the way to go, but maybe I'm being OTT. I don't know.

I'd rather not go into detail on a public forum for personal reasons.

    thanks.

I think start at your GP, just in case there might be anthing at a medical level. Counselling might be an option and relevant / suitable book(s) can then be suggested. Your GP will be able to recommend some counsellors in the locality.

i would agree with victor that it probably is the wisest thing to start with a gp. i'd be very wary though in which one you chose. you don't want someone who is just going to prescribe you a few pills and send you on your way. getting referred to a good counsellor will be hugely important....you'd want to go to someone who is very experienced. they should then be able to pinpoint how your problems arose and how you can overcome them. once you identify them, there is a wealth of info on the net, books, etc which will be of enormous help to you. you'll be surprised by how many people are experiencing the same issues.

OP i did the same as you are considering and went to a hypnotherapist(although i only went for 1 or 2 sessions) If you have deep seated problems then hypnosis wont help you need to see a counsellor or a gp and talk over your problems

Books wont help you either as they stop you getting help and theymake yo analyse yourself which isnt always a good thing

A few years ago was trying to stop biting my nails. Trying a number of measures. CBT only one that worked. Mainly because it was time bounded and was six sessions plus is reclaimable through health insurance. I liked that it gave homework.

Cheaper than gel infills for me!

There is an association out in Tallaght that has a list of alternative practitioners. The guy for CBT I went to is in Castleknock if that's any good.
