Hey, I have a Dell inspiron - 6400 & for some time now it doesn't recognise any cd/dvd.
I'm able to put them in easily, but after that nothing happens, it just constantly spins & makes an occasional odd noise.

I've been told to call Dell, but (a) I'm not sure which number to ring & (b) there's probably only so much they can do...it being over the phone & all:D

So is there some microsoft shop or any shop (that isn't dodgy) which fixes labtops etc?
    Really very clueless here:cool:

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

If its under warrenty tell dell to send out replacement drive

Otherwise take it out and buy a new one

Instructions for removing, (just one screw holding it)
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/ins6400/en/sm/opdrive.htm#wp999869

you'd probably get one online on ebay or something or you could ask dell how much the part is

or just get an external usb drive

Wow, I didn't know external usb drives even existed!
I think I'll go with that (at least for a temporary basis), it seems like the option with the least amount of hassle.

    Thanks again!:)

Go to a 2 euro shop, get a dvd lens cleaning kit.
USE it and leave the tray open for 20minutes to allow the lens to dry.
Does the dvd drive show up as drive d in my computer.

does the drive show up at all in explorer?
If it does not then try the following:
    1. Check for a driver for it.
    2. Remove it from the laptop, and put it back in. It's clearly getting power, but they usually use a different connection for data, and that could be loose/disconnected.
    3. Set the laptop to boot from cd as the first option. This forces the system to check for a cd. You don't need to actually have a bootable cd, or to boot from cd, to do this.

I recently fixed the cd drive on my inspiron 1500 by doing this. The last step was required; it would not see the drive otherwise.
