    Hi

struggling with ideas for a much needed holiday this year.

Flights seem reasonable enough in and out of Bilbao and some of the surrounding airports to the east & west.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for about ten days touring around .

Any places which are a must ,any places to avoid.

was thinking of renting a car and doing a bit of traveling around.

    All suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

    Eoin

We're going to be down near Biarritz in a few weeks time and thinking about heading over the border for a trip so I've been doing a bit of research.

Bilbao has some interesting architecture but also has the famous Guggenheim museum. From an historical perspective, take a look at the impact of the Spanish Civil War on the region (I'm currently reading "The Battle for Spain" by Antony Beevor).

San Sebastian is supposed to be lovely, according to friends who visited for the shhh Munster match recently .

We've previously driven part of the Pyrrhenees (I'm sorry, I can't spell that word) and its lovey. Andorra is worth a trip and the area around Carcassonne and down to the French coast is also lovely.

Just some few observations. I don't know the area very well but it may help.

Get a travel guide from the Library - Frommers or DK (I had one out a few weeks ago).

Last summer i flew into Bilbao, spent 2 days there and then headed to San Sebastian. I didn't like Bilbao, found it dreary and a bit boring! San Sebastian is one of the nicest places i'v been too! Great little city with lovely beaches and a cool buzz.

A day is enough to see Bilbao - morning in the Gulbenkian museum (the building is more interesting than the exhibits there, apart from the Puppy). Eat lunch there, then wander around the old town for the afternoon - take the lift up to the park for great views of the city. The Plaza Nueva is great for tapas and bar-hopping in the evening.

San Sebastian is worth a bit more time if you're a beach lover. Weather can be unpredictable though. Go to the Constitution Square in the evening for AMAZING tapas.

You can get a bus from San Sebastian to Biarritz - it takes about an hour or so. Biarritz is also great - plus Ryanair fly into there so you could fly home from there. For some reason weather in Biarritz is nearly always better than San Sebastian - could never figure that one out.
