What was Desmonds actual purpose? All he did was go down to the like and lift the plug out of the sink. I get that if he wasn't imune to the electro magnatism he wouldn't of been able to go into the pond but was that the reason was there, just to lift the plug? Was that Widmores great plan? If it was, if Jacob told Widmore that Desmond had to go back the island lift a plug and make Cecil mortal, why didn't Jacob just tell Desmond that before he left the island to begin with?

Jacob didn't know Cecil was so close to finding the loophole he needed to kill him. So Dessie's unique skill wasn't urgently required.

the plan was Lift the giant stopper kill mib and put it back in again?

Also why didn't jack face a fate 'worse than death' like mib?

That's fair enuff but it still doesn't explain his purpose? And what was the sacrifice Desmond had to make. He entered the pool, felt some pain, pulled the plug out, got pulled out of the hole and at the end of t all he was alive.

Maybe he was to stay down there but jack took his place.

cause of the electromagnetism, no one else could have got to the stopper.

Widmore's plan was to destroy the island, with Fake Locke on it - and the island would have been destroyed if Jack had not went back and fixed it.

The sacrifice was that nobody was sure Des would survive. They hoped he would but I don't think anybody was certain. Des was also important because his concious could move between the real world and the 'after death' world which he thought was a sideways timeline but wasn't.

That he would never get to see Penny or baby Charlie again (or that's how I took it).

Theres no way in Hell Widmores plan was to destroy the island. Jacob went to Widmore and told him how to get back to the island and what to do when he got there ie bring Desmond. So if Jacob told Widmore to use Des to destroy the island why wud he need a candidate to replace him in protecting the island!

I guess Jacob knew that for Locke to be killed the island needed to be 'turned off'. Des is the only man who can do that.
