J1 Visa- do you have to do a ESTA too

    :eek:1 Visa- do you have to do a ESTA too- can somebody advise if a student has a J1 stamped into their passport do they still need to do a ESTA???

    No. ESTA's are only required for those travelling to the USA without a visa.

    thank you started to panic as my niece is leaving on Wednesday and I thought this was the case but self doubt crept in and couldnt find an answer anywhere else! :D

    Sorry to hop on this but is the ESTA that thing you fill in on the plane normally when you head over to the USA?

    Why don't J1 people have to fill it in anyway? Won't they still want to know where we are planning on staying for the first night of arriving in the country....

    I have a J1 in my passport. Leaving in 10 days so really must organise all my papers into some form of order :)

    They will know this from your API that you will do with your airline - just check into your booking on the airlines website and do this me thinks? Away to check what my niece has done!

    The ESTA is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. You fill this out online before you travel if you do not require a visa, i.e. the visa waiver. It is for holidays and such.

    You fill out the I-94 on the plane where you'll have to give your accommodation details, amount of money you're bringing into the country (mainly aimed at investors) and such.
