Ever improving Alan O'Shea of Cork produced a sterling performance in Copenhagen to take second in 2.22.52. It could've been even faster, but the pace-maker sprained their ankle after 5km.

Superb result. Does the pace-maker really make that much of a difference? Purely from a wind-resistance perspective?

Not sure regarding wind, tbh. But the European Champs standard is 2.18, and I'm not sure was that his aim or was that time even within his repertoire but the premature retirement of the PM might've fecked up any plans he had for a time closer to that.

The fact that they messed up with his drinks might have been a big factor in Alan not achieving a sub 2.20.
He only received one of his drinks from the special feed stations. Nevertheless, it's a decent run and will hopefully lead to a good future at the distance.

I would estimate having to front run would cost you 5-10sec per mile. Alan was beaten by about 20sec so difficult to know whether he had to do all the running himself or whether they shared a bit. Certainly from the halfway splits, there was only one other runner ahead of him (by a minute) at halfway (who seems to have died completely in second half) so its fair to say, he had to do a lot of the running himself meaning the pacer dropping out could have cost him 2-4min. if there had been a few more runners running that pace wouldn't have cost so much/anything, so I'd say he definetly has sub 2:18 in him in a big city marathon.
