Best is a vague term, when you are talking about something like photography.

edit: realized that sounded harsh, was not meant to.

What i mean is what are you looking for your camera to do? Do you want the best picture quality or more optical zoom? You you want to be able to shoot in RAW or is JPG all you want? Etc...

For compacts I cant see you going wrong with one of panasonics tz series.
Ive had a tz3 and currently have a tz6.Best compacts ive ever owned :)

Panasonic Lumix generally get rave reviews. The TZ7 is/was a great camera.
Hopefully the TZ10 will be just as good.

    Canon S90 looks good too.

do you want to have manual controls (aperture, shutter speed, manual)?
do you want a large zoom or not?
Is low light shooting a priority?
do you want pocketable? most are, the Panasonic LX3 is 'big'

The Canon S90 is great, maunal settings, medium sized zoom.
The TZ/ZS series from Panasonic gets 'best compact' virtually everywhere. Superzoom but no manual settings.
