right so..... in a few months time or next year (depending on job status) im gonna start considering on a car for myself.

doing some research for myself 18 year old.

i'd like to be pocket friendly like everybody else and my first car clearly will be second hand, and im thinking something on the lines of a Bora.

and im thinking up of total costs....

    full license

    insurance: 1.4L petrol = €2600
    1.9L Diesel TDI = € 2800

But i want to know the other costs and in know which would be cheaper to have for tax - fuel costs etc.

i would check motortax.ie but it appears to be offline. :pac:

so people... give me total costs, opinions and thoughts please.

full license for 8 moths too.

    thanks guys

im really asking should i go petrol or diesel ?

i dont mind for driving difference between them, they both seem about the same for normal day to day driving.

so petrol or diesel ? and whats the costs ?

    cheers lads

a diesel bora will be easier to sell on but more expensive to buy , if you do above 25000 miles a year definitley diesel, without a doubt, less than that and its really a preference and whats available at the time

1.25 zetec Fiesta is a great starter car.

You've not mentioned budgets or requirements though? What is it to be used for? commuting or just a run around? will you be travelling long distances? Do you need a bigger car for any reason?

my bad... thanks for that ! :)

starter car... not really a starter anymore. driving the oulfella's vectra petrol for about a year now and can drive perfectly. had a go at an X-trail recently for the first time ever diesel and t'was good.

so ok i want a car i can hold on to for a good bit.

requirements = get to work (not far) a tiny bit of commuting from time to time and a little run around at the same time

Distance = normal everyday not far but the odd time could be quite a bit of travel country wise.

i think i dont want anything under 1.4L Petrol. I would like diesel aswell

bigger car ? well honestly im not a fan of hatch backs, i like saloons, estates and jeeps. I dont plan on doing anything to the car... just want the basic stuff, no alloys or any of that nonsense.

again because its a first car i want to try to stick to a limit of €3,000.

    cheers again.

What makes you think that? A 1.6 in a bigger, heavier car can be slower than a smaller engine in a lighter car, and will definitely cost more in fuel, tax and insurance.

Power outputs can vary a lot among engines of the same capacity. Take the Fiesta, you'll find some fitted with an old 1.3 bag of spanners and some fitted with a Yamaha 1.25 motor. Guess which is more powerful.

not looking for speed though.... just want to get from A - B without hassle and what not

get yourself a commercial jeep mate, I bought my first car (2004 Kia Sorento 2.5TD) when i was 18, full licence less than a year , no NCB and my insurance was 1800 fully comp, once you dont miss the back seats commercial jeeps are a nice option, big cars, powerful, lots of space, cheap insurance for young people, cheap road tax, free parking in loading bays, the x-trail petrol is to be avoided though, go get yourself something nice , there are full spec kia sorentos to be had (leather, climate control etc..) for under 10k , and they do 28-32mpg

renualt clio 1.5DCI €2950 (no back seats)

    insurance = €2222.10

2200 for insurance on a commercial?
    nah, that's brutal.
You'd get far FAR cheaper than that.

and if you're gonna go for a bora, don't bother with the 1.4.
Probably the worst engine ever made./

quinn do the cheapest commercial insurance for under 25's , and your problem is there you picked a car van , they tend to get crashed a lot , for instance , the peugot partner van im driving at the moment costs the same to insure as my kia sorento did because of crash loading, go find yourself something nice and big (commercial insurance doesnt give a f*ck about engine size)

Does your mum have a car? If not you could share the use of her car if
she bought a car. The insurance would be much cheaper. It might give you a few more options.
This is how most young people get started.

funny enough... if i was added as an additional driver on my dads policy on a 1.6 vectra it would actually be about €3,757.43

its cheaper for me on my own.

never heard of that hyundai , and try it under commercial vehicle and put seats down as 2, it wont go near that quote

got a quote of 2200 asuming 18 since november , full licence 0 years , TPF&T on a 2006 Kia Sorento Valued at 9 grand - thats the online quote so of you phoned them it would be more like 1900

    stupid me indeed....

just tried to do your kia there and they wont quote on either car insurance or commercial... think it might be out of the question.

they have rules on their van insurance section that i dont qualify for cos i dont have a company....

looks like i'll be sticking with regular car and insurance.
