Insurance claim question

I'm in the process of getting quotes for car insurance at the moment. One of the questions ask if I have had any claims within the past 5 years. I had a claim against me due to a crash in 2004. The claim was settled in 2007.

My question is: do I go by when the claim was made (6 years ago) or when the claim was settled (3 years ago)?

Just disclose it. If it's beyond consideration they'll do just that.

    If in doubt always disclose.

I think that your current (or most recent) insurer should have sent you a certificate on your last renewal that details any claims. That should give you an idea as it will have the number of claim free years.

It's a tough one. Insurance companies are b@stards for this...

The claim started in 2004 and was open until 2007. If you mention it to them they'll say "2007 then", but really it should be 2004.

Thanks for replies guys. I have a letter of "Proof of Driving Experience" or something like that, which does mentions the claim but doesn't actually mention how many no claim years I've built up.

However, I was on the site of the insurance company I hope to use, and when you enter that you've made a claim in the past, it asks you for the year of the incident. It gives you a drop down list option starting from 2005, so hopefully I'm ok in that regard.

I have to send them the letter of driving experience, so I'll be disclosing it anyway.

    Thanks again for advice.

It is the year in which the claim was submitted - in your case 2004.

In case anyone questions this is how insurers work - consider this - when do they affect your NCB after an accident - the following year or only after they make a payment???

You do not need to disclose this accident.
