Hey I'm new to all this, so I hope I'm doing it right.

I really hope someone can give me some advice. After being extremely nervous of Dentists I have plucked up the courage to go again. I started my treatment just after christmas and I have had two extractions, one root canal, three fillings. I still have to have more work done and I am happy to get it all done as I want my remaining teeth to be healthy.

Anyway, my latest root canal treatment seems to have failed as I now have quite a bit of pain in the tooth. I got this work done 7 weeks ago now and have decided to get the tooth extracted, as I just can't keep being in pain. So I bit the bullet and phoned to make an appointment with my Dentist. Now I don't know if it is just me, (and maybe it is), but when I phone this Dental Clinic, the Receptionist always makes me feel like I am putting her out and I feel so embarrassed. I am extremely shy and find it very difficult to speak to strangers, but I really don't want to change Dentists because it has taken alot for me to actually go to a Dentist and get this work done and for the first time ever, I actually feel safe in the Dental Chair with this Dentist because he explains everything and is very gentle. I can even chat to the Dentist now as I don't be quite as nervous as when the treatment started. I used to just lie shaking in the chair and not be able to speak at all. My dentist has really been very good to me and I actually trust him. I have already spent over €2,800 since Christmas, and have quite alot more to spend. Approximately €5,000. Anyway, the Receptionist made an appointment for me for four weeks time, which I kinda thought was a long way away, but anyway, I was just wondering does anyone know if it is painful to get a rct tooth extracted. Should I ask for sedation. I had it for my other extractions which were quite difficult and it worked great.

Also, I have to have another root canal treatment done on another tooth and am really worried this might fail aswell. Would it be better just to go ahead and extract this tooth also. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for being so long winded. I really am in a frazzle now. Maybe I should just go to another Dental Clinic.

anyway thanks a million for taking the time to read.

    Hi,

if you explain you are in pain the receptionist should get you in sooner I would feel. You are happy with the dentist and treatment to date and have made great strides in getting to where you are so dont let the receptionist put you off. Maybe she was just a bit hassled or having a bad day

The root canal may not be the cause of the pain so dont give up on the tooth just yet, discuss with the dentist who did the root canal treatment first. Unfortunately not all root canal treatments work out even when done to the highest standards.

Sometimes root treated teeth can be more difficult to extract, particluarly if done a long time ago but for most of them it should be the same as extracting any other tooth. If the sedation worked before then go for it again.

If the root canal teatment fails, and it may not, any other root canal treatments would still have a good success rate, every tooth is different .

Thanks so much day dreamer, thats good news, I thought if the root canal tooth was hurting that it meant it had failed. Hopefully, I might not have to get it extracted. I will keep my appointment anyway and see what the dentist says. I definetly won't be phoning to make it sooner, I can hold out for a few weeks. The painkillers can get rid of the pain for a good few hours at a time. I really appreciate your answer, thank you so much. Very much appreciated :)

The root canal shouldn't still be hurting 7 weeks after completion of treatment. it could be something very simple like a 'high bite' which would need immediate adjustment, or it could be quite a variety of things. One thing I am certain of is that the dentist who did the work would like to know right away if you are experiencing pain so long after treatment. It could be his receptionest hasn't passed the message on.

Why not print out this thread and mail it to the dentist so he is fully in the picture.

Thanks your advice Georgie. I know what you are saying, but unfortunately, I know its not the bite thats high, because this tooth does not hit off any other tooth as the Dentist filed it down, thats whats worrying me and why I think the root canal treatment has failed. The tooth only hurts when I press on it I can chew no problem, but just when I press against it, it hurts. I will definetly phone the Dentist if the pain gets worse. BTW when I phoned, the Receptionist asked me what was wrong and I explained it to her, so I would be mortified to phone again and make a fuss about it and she asked me what I wanted to get done, so I just said I want it extracted. I hate to make a fuss, but I will ring them if the pain gets worse. I really appreciate your advice, thanks so much.

Well, I'm am going to take your advice and ring up my Dentist to make an appointment. I know my own Dentist is away for a few weeks, but there is another Dentist in the Clinic that might be able to see me. I'm just afraid if I leave my tooth the way it is, it will just keep getting worse and then maybe I will have no option but to get it extracted. I really don't want to be in this pain for another three weeks, so here goes ........ thanks again for all the advice!
