    Any suggestions for restaurants in Innsbruck or Salzburg?

    Cheap and cheerful being the theme :)

    In the "Altstadt" = old town of Austrian and German cities, there are many restaurants and sometimes Burger King and McDonalds. There are also Imbiss(es).

    Altstadt = old, historic part of the town. Sometimes referred to as "Innenstadt" or "Zentrum".

    Imbiss = Snackbar / Kiosk / Stand. Frankfurter, Fleischpflanzerl and more. Nowadays some Imisses have wooden seats.

    Frikadelle = Fleischpflanzerl - a meat ball.
    Brötchen = Semmel - breadroll.
    Wiener in Frankfurt = sausages, in Vienna ( Wien ) they are called Frankfurter.

    Downtown in the Altstadt you have a large culinary choice.

    A completely ridiculous suggestion - I believe there's a restaurant on one of the main pedestrianised streets in Innsbruck that translates roughly to "House of Chicken" or "Chicken Palace" - or something.As the name says - the menu is all chicken. It's been a few years since I was there.
    But it was good!!

    Depends on what you mean by cheap and cheerful but in any Gasthof you'll usually get typical austrian stuff from about 6-15€. At lunchtime (nearer to an irishman's breakfast than lunch usually ;) ) there'll usually be a cheap daily menu where you might get soup and a main course a bit cheaper.

    As above imbisses will be cheaper again but these are more snacks than anything substantial. McSOnald's and possibly burger king will not be that much cheaper than a Gasthof!

    Wander a little outside the touristy areas and things will be a bit cheaper also. In Salzburg that'll mean maybe crossing over the river or going a few streets away. In Innbruck it may just be a case of getting off the main street. Heading towards the university in Innsbruck might also be an idea (it's very near the centre).

    also
    what is cheap?
    I have lost the concept of the irish concept of money.
    8 to 10 euros for a starter was acceptable and cheap and cheerful a couple of years ago.
    20+ euros for a main course was also not considered dear.
    Maybe things have changed. Christ knows.

    Anyhow, downtown salzburg isnt all too expensive. Theres a wide variety of restaurants and at what I would consider reasonable prices. (Theres a few posh places too so just check the menu and keep going if the prices are set for yanks with too much money in their pockets)
    Heres an example of a place with starters from 2.80 and most main courses for under a tenner.

    I've eaten at a few places downtown in Salzburg and all were grand but cant remember names or locations to be honest.

    If I remember rightly, tourist central Innsbruck near the Golden Roof is a dear enough spot. Still, theres a Wienerwald (the chickeney place) not far away and prices in other places away from the golden roof are similar to the wildermann menu in Salzburg.

    Also a thing to remember. You are very near italy. In Innsbruck not even an hour by car. Pizza is way better than Ireland and normally only about 7 Euro or so. Pasta dishes are also about the same price.

    If you are REALLY looking just to keep the belly full and f*ck the quality, then Mc Donalds is a great option. Also kebabs are cheap and ultra high in calories and great stodge for a session of pints.
    Innsbruck is MUCH better for the crack than salzburg by the way as its a university town and theres a strip of one bar after the next at the railway arches and an independent music venue the other side of the inner city!!
