Single shot or semi-auto short firearms in .22LR with a magazine capacity of 5 rounds or less can be had with a non-restricted licence. The firearms on the list are examples of these, but you are not limited to what is on the list (in theory :) ) as long as the firearm meets the criteria.

Your first port-of-call should be to one of the authorised ranges which cater for target pistol and have a chat with the lads and range officers there.

Here's a couple which spring to mind, all of which I've shot in and have found the members and RO's to be most helpful:

Midlands National Shooting Centre of Ireland (MNSCI), Blueball, Tullamore http://www.nationalshootingcentre.ie/ (Contact John Paul)
Rathdrum Rifle & Pistol Club (RRPC), Rathdrum, Wicklow http://www.rathdrumrpc.org/ (Contact Kealan)
East Coast Shooting Club, Roundwood, Wicklow http://www.eastcoastshootingclub.com/ (Contact Dave)
Hilltop Shooting Club, Newtownmountkennedy, Wicklow http://www.pcquad.com/ (Contact Pat)

Try these out and get a feel for what's out there by way of target pistol shooting opportunities.

There's also Harbour House in Kildare and a couple of others which I've heard recommended by lads who regularly shoot there, but haven't been there myself to say yay or nay.

Depending on what target pistol disciplines you'd want to compete in, you could also contact the following organisations to get an overview in addition to visiting the above ranges:

National Target Shooting Association (NTSA) http://www.targetshootingireland.org/

National Association of Sporting Rifle and Pistol Clubs (NASRPC) http://www.nasrpc.ie/

Although, membership of these groups is not a prerequisite to your participation in target pistol shooting on an authorised range, e.g. MNSCI.
i was looking at the list at the bottom of the commissioners guidelines are they ones that can or cant be licenced

They are examples only of the types of .22 pistols which may now be licenced as non-restricted firearms. Whilst the list is not intended to be exhaustive nor prescriptive, it appears to be working out that way with many of FAC applications being dealt with as if the guidelines are set-in stone.

Some good pistols on the list, but they're not the only .22 ones which may be licenced, although you should have an easier time of it with the Guards if your requested pistol is on the list.
i was thinking of getting a s&w 22A or a beretta u22 neos if i was permitted to.

    Good choice IMHO;):D

There's a previous thread on this very topic which may be of some more help to you: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055801908

None AFAIK, but I stand to be corrected on that.

Hope that's all of some help to you and best of luck with your research.
If I had to give one piece of advice only, it would be: Visit as many ranges as possible and speak with as many experienced shooters and RO's as possible.

And remember "There's no such thing as a dumb question - Just a dumb answer!"
