    hey gang

    hope yer all well

im here in germany and looking for cycling shorts, i bought cycling leggings in aldi, bout two years ago and have been wearing them since, but my backside is in bits lately, so i need to invest in some proper cycling shorts, since the summer is here.

im small fitting -bout 32 waste, 170cm tall.

can someone please recommend a good pair, i was in a bike shop over here and just feeling around to see how padded the padding was, but I really cant tell since I am new to the shorts.

i remember going into a bike shop in cork, my hometown once, and th guy there said you need to be spending a 100e at least for a good shorts???

i have a specialised body geometry saddle, so the saddle is top notch, and i have a la pierre rcr 500 fitness bike.

any advice on the shorts would be great!

    thanks

    ed

€100+ is for the likes of the assos. The best pair of shorts I have are last years Quick Step which are made by Vermarc, the only other team I can think of that are supplied by them is AG2R, which if you got the Irish National Champion jersey would look sweet in Germany.

Castelli, Nalini, De Marchi, Santini - all excellent quality and can be found for anything from 40 euro upwards if you shop around and root through the bargain bin in your lbs. I have all of the above brands and doubt I have ever payed anywhere near rrp. Shops are always flogging off older stock.

    +1 for De Marchi.
They seem to be 'generous' with their padding.

Assos all the way, if you ride lots its worth spending the dollars to treat yourself [and groin] to a nice pair or two, castelli are also great in my experience, nalini are HORRENDOUS in my op for anything othere than racing/hard training, the chamoix is like sandpaper after a while.

The most important thing with shorts is they should fit like a glove [a tight latex one :pac:] so that when you are standing the bibs are uncomfortable and feeling like they are compressing you, but once on the bike in the propper riding position they are just right and dont budge an inch.

I'll second that Santini gitcx . My first choice of bib shorts , did 145km yesterday no hassle from these .

OP, i'm the same fit as yourself and have found the Giordana tenax laser bibshorts to be perfect:

They're not the cheapest, but still considerably cheaper than Assos. As per me@ucd's criteria, they feel kinda strange when standing in them, but on the bike the fit is great and the padding is plentiful enough without getting in the way.

Hi tawfeeradux, I was considering getting those Giordana shorts. Can i ask you height/waist you are and what size did you get? I have another pair of Giordana and had to get XL even though I am 5 11” and 32 waist.

    thanks

If it is your first pair of cycling shorts I'd buy something cheap until you figure out what you need size-wise etc. No need to dive in on the Assos. I did my first Wicklow 200 on a £20 pair of shorts from CRC and they were grand, indeed still are.

Howdy, I'm about to buy a pair of Orca shorts tomorrow at €39.99 from Argos,
recommended to me by a friend as being good value for quality/comfort.
Using Altura at the moment, (ok) and tried the latest Aldi offering, (worse than awful!) I can only dream of Assos at the moment!

    hey lads,

kood someone please suggest a good pair of shorts, and where i can buy them cheap, i went into a bike shop today, and koodnt find anything for less than 90e, i am willing to spend the money on a decent pair, but just want to get the good pair of cycling shorts at the best possible price, maybe online.

my only concern is that i will get the wrong size.

Bought a pair of tri shorts there on Ribble Cycles for 44 euro, they are 2XU tri shorts. Use them on the bike and they are very good in my opinion. :)

@ciarsciars, sorry, only saw your question now.

I'm 5' 7", 32 inch waist. My bibshorts (all of which are Giordana) are size medium, as are my jerseys (some Giordana, some Santini).

@eurotrotter, in relation to sizing, you're better off figuring out what size works for you before going online to buy something. At 3-4 cm taller than me, you might be more comfortable with large rather than medium, but it depends on brand, whether it's bibshorts or plain shorts, how snug you want them to be, etc.

Can I suggest trying on a few pairs in a bike shop, if the price is outside your budget, make your excuses for not buying (too itchy, too shiny, whatever!) & then try online. CRC have a good range, few examples here:
