The greatest event of the decade - devestating we're not there...

    20 odd days to the World Cup, the greatest show on earth and set to be the most spectacular in recent history. Ireland are not there but arguably deserve to be. Just imagine for a minute how different the atmosphere in Ireland might be at the minute, had we not been cruelly cheated out of our chance. Imagine what the excitement of our national team's participation at the World Cup would do for this sad country...:(

    There're about 190 countries who could claim this...

    And what..? I just commented on how the World Cup would have lifted THIS country. It is a travesty that we are not there this year. We competed for a place in the WC by manoeuvering the most difficult qualifying route of any team in the world and lost due to blatent, unashamed cheating on the part of France and FIFA. Personally, i'm gutted to be watching on the fringes when my team that fought so hard to be there is not. Unfortunately most football fans in Ieland are much too preoccupied by jumping on the LPool, Man Yoo, EPL bandwagon to really care about the national team. Oh how things will change when we qualify comfortably for Euro 2012.

    Edit: Probably should have rephrased the title as 'the greatest speoting event of recent times'...the cynics above know what I meant/

    Define recent times? Would it surpass the 2008 Olympics? Or the 2004 Olympics? No.

    Anyway, how would it lift the country? Half the country would miss several days off work with drink related illnesses. The country would virtually close down during games, except for the pubs. When Ireland eventually gets knocked out, after failing to win a match, the rate of clinical depression soars. Better to get that crap over with the previous November. Now we can sit back and enjoy the real beautiful game.

    I'm sure most people have seen the Sun's Anyone but the french campaign...

    Found this website online yesterday,

    http://www.younameit.ie/anyone_but_france_merchandise/

    They make customised clothing & accessories etc. and they're doing an Anyone But France range;

    They have pretty cool mugs - 'Anyone But France/Hand of Frog' on them.

    I think the organisers of the Winter Olympics would disagree with that.

    I'm sure most people wouldn't read that loathsome rag.
