As the title suggests,I want to buy a Sky+HD box. I currently have a normal sky box With just freesat channels and I want to move to HD freesat.

Can I just buy a box off eBay and plug and play?

Any tips on what to look out for in buying a box?

well in order to get HD you need to subscripe to sky to get them to turn it on...not sure about sky+, you used to have to pay extra for that too so they would have to turn it on too...so might not be as simple as just buying a box but interested to know what others think

sky+ only works on a sky sub

I don't have a sky subscribtion and don't intend to. I just want the freesat HD channels ITV,BBC and I think channel 4and e4 do one too.

Someone told me that you need a sky subscribtion to be able to use the sky+

    any ideas

You would be better buying a Humax HD Freesat.

The PVR on Sky+ and SkyHD don't work without a subscription. In theory Sky could even make all SkyHD boxes without subs downscale all HD.

Sky+ and SkyHD only make sense for subscriptions.

Just to thread-crash :o, if I were to get a Sky HD box with my Sky + subscription, would I have my normal Sky+ function with a HDMI connection to my tv?

Another question in this direction lads. Have sky+ with a normal sky+ box but i would like to get the free HD channels for the world cup and just in general too i guess!

So i was going to just get a skyHD box off adverts but unfortunately there a bit rare on that so i've found i could get one off ebay for a bit less. I could get a thomson box with component output(not really important for me) for less than €130. Is this a good deal? And another thing, would this box be reliable, i know one's with component went out of production in early 2008 so is it wise to get such an old box?

And another thing, i quite like the new epg, would i still get this seeing as i do not have a HD sub and have no intention of upgrading to it

    Thanks for any advice! :)

yes the new epg will be on it. without HD sub

I have an old Thompson box from 2007 (from ebay) still working fine, except i had to upgrade the power supply.
