Hey Guys, sorry if this has been asked before, however my 10 mins or forum searching was fruitless, (more down to my own experience I think!).

If I buy a car and the tax is out, am I liable for the back tax?

    Thanks!

Wow thanks for the quick answer, I though I might have to pay the tax for the last 6 months, am surprised the revenue wouldn't chase the 6 months tax from me! thanks!

No that liability would be with the previous owner, you only pay for the time you own it. Try to get it as close to the start of a month as possible so you don't end up paying for a whole month and only actually own the car for a couple of days of that month.

If you're buying a car,buy it/sign the change of ownership on the book the 1st of the following month if possible. The past untaxed months fall in a past owner period. You just pay from the 1st of the month then

As above. You pay from the start of the month you bought it.
