Mazda 626 smoky in the mornings.

I was gifted a 98 mazda 626 today. Lovely clean car, but it puffs white/blue smoke on start up which clears once engine is warm and it will drive smoke free all day.
So it seems its only smoky on start up from cold and then its fine.
Can someone give me a clue as to the problem?
I dabble in diy mechanics but internal engine problems are beyond my skills. Doubt its a job I could fix but im curious to know whats causing it.

The brother had a 1997 1.8 petrol onenot so long ago and the very same thing happened to him dont take my answer as theright one but he said it was the seals on the pistons leaking oil to where ever it did and that caused the smoke.

Valve stem seals are old and hardened/withered/worn.
Small amount of oil will seep into cylinder(s) overnight, will burn off within 1 minute of running -looks crappy but engine is probably perfectly fine - Mine flew past NCT emissions on Hydrocarbons, and the small amount burnt every morning hasn't knackered the Cat either - CO emissions were fine.

It may only be some cylinders/valves that are affected so far- depending what way you park it up the affected cyclinder may have the dodgy valve closed, so you may not see smoke every morning. And then some morning you may get an awful plume.

My theory on keeping it to a minimum is to use 15W40 mineral oil and change it every 5k. Might try 20W40 next time. No point using 5W30 semi or fully synthetic - it'll drip down more easily.
I think there are products that claim to recondition these seals, haven't tried em - looking like a hillbilly every time I start my car doesn't bother me too much...

It's a head-off job to fix unless you are very very handy and careful - don't bother -drive it on til it won't go any further!

my prelude did that, valve stem seals as said by the chap above i reckoned, am not a fan of the stop smoke treatments either, it wont get any worse really.

Just for clarity (considering a recent thread where confusion reigned over older mazda diesel engines) - the Mazda 626 and 323 are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT cars to the Mazda6 and Mazda3.

By the way dirtydiesel, apart from the valve stem seals I don't think there are any "known faults" specific to these cars.

Sorry lads should of said its a 2litre petrol automatic and at some stage it was imported from Queensland Australia! It was parked up for 10 months after a bin lorry reversed into it, minor damage to bumper and bonnet.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction faultwise, I can put up with the smoke but the neighbours..............

that model in the 2.0 petrol had piston ring problems and burned oil,the 1.8 never seemed too have the same fault, dont know why,but I remember loads of 2.0's that gave this trouble

Ya, I pity anyone with open windows downwind of mine when I start it, it's not nice smoke. The US autobox had a bad reputation on some other forums I had a look at, but I think those cars were built in the US with a Ford designed box. Hopefully yours was made in Japan and has a different autobox.

Keep an eye on the oil level all the same, considering the piston ring comment above.
