Golf car-stereo question

Hi, just wondering if you folks could help me out:

So, have a 04 golf with typical car-stereo setup - the standard radio/cd player fascia that comes with the vehicle. As I listen to most of my tunes from an ipod I'm wondering how to best connect it direct into the sytem (I hate those fm receiver things also by the way)

Is there any way to connect an rca input cable or small phono jack input into the back of the car stereo and have it positioned in the glove box (I saw this setup on another car by the way) or do I have to replace the car stereo completely? - if so how, and is there anywhere I can purchase a stereo specific to the golf with one of these inputs?

Thanks in advance and excuse the 'nooby' questions as I've no knowledge in this area ;)

    J

You're only option with that oem headunit is to get a device that mimics a cd changer. It basically connects your ipod to your headunit but you're headunit treats it as a 6CD changer.

You're radio will treat it as a 6 CD changer so no track names come up. You have to make 5 playlists with the music that you want and the 6th is your entire library. You can also choose an album or song while its disconnected and the device will make the unit "think" that its one of the "cd's" once you reconnect it.

I only know of the VW original part and it costs about €150 from a main dealer (total rip-off). I got one second hand for much cheaper. It's not too bad and it probably is safer than searching through your ipod while driving.

There might be spurious ones available. Otherwise you should just get another headunit that does it all. It wont look as good on your dash but the sound will be much better (as long as you update the speakers too) compared to the crap VW ones.

Any idea where I could buy a replacement stereo with a built-in line in or rca input online? I'd prefer something neat and tidy to be honest but thanks for all your help!

www.dynamicsounds.co.uk - there cheap and ship here quickly, i use them for a lot of installs I do , theres a range of kenwood pioneer and alpine head units with ipod control that would be perfect, the only thing you need after is an antenna adaptor which is 3-4 euro and any of them will fit your golf perfectly

Can you not fit a Parrot Mki 9000/1/2 to a golf?

Perfect! - exactly what I was looking for, sorry to be a pain in the a-hole but am a complete nooby with car audio; how do I know what type of speakers I upgrade to - say size for example (golf mk5) - I'm looking at pioneer speakers at the mo, is it worth upgrading both front and back or should I just stick with the driver/passenger side?

Thanks for the help foks, great stuff.

unless you plan on buying a sepperate more powerful amp to drive them id leave your stock speakers, VW used decent blaupunkt ones afaik , so id leave them be , buy the headunit first and decide after if your speakers are crackly or the sound isnt how youd like it you can always go back and buy speakers later,
