Does anyone have any building advice on the following; Basically our neighbor has an existing extension(rear of house) where the boundary wall should be between the two houses. It has been there 10 years+ so Im told and permission was given by the people who lived in the house I am in now. I am thinking about building an extension now.Question is whats the best way to build the extension since the boundary wall is now their extension.Do I use their extension as a support wall(with permission obviously) or is there another way to mount a structure where I don't lose space by building my extension a few inches from the existing extension. To me ,it looks like it will be very messy if I do build , has anyone come across similar situation and what was done?

Best bet would be to use the existing wall as your wall, sign up a Party Wall agreement. Your neighbour shouldn't have any problem with it really because it's the best solution for both parties.

Your other option would be as you suggest, to build your side wall a few inches inside the boundary. The issue with that is the foundations. A common detail would be to build your foundation lower than the existing boundary wall foundation, so part of your foundation will be going under the existing boundary wall foundation. If you hire an architect or engineer, they should know of the detail and be able to instruct the contractor. But as I said, your best bet would be to use the existing wall

    Cheers

That makes sense, and your right it would be in the interest of both parties to use a common support. I'll run it pass the neighbor and see if they agree.

    Thanks again
