So how many of your "online" friends would you be real friends with?

Just seen This link through Twitter for a new Microsoft device they will be bringing out, but it got me thinking: how many of my "friends" on social networking sites would/could I really be friends with?

The clips they run through are pretty apt, would you friend someone online just because they are friends with someone else or you had an interest in what they represent, because you wanna get in their pants, are old friends you just dont get to see anymore, or are they current friends?

Personally, most of my online friends through Facebook/Bebo/Boards I've met in RL so I would have had SOMETHING in common with them, as I usually dont be friendlies with someone until I've met them.

It kinda depends really most people i have added on facebook are ones i use for the games.

But i really only talk to the ones i either know well in real life that are me real mates or the ones i intend on gettin to know better ;)

Yeah actually. I've met up with people that I chat away to online, but in person it was really awkward and stilted. (til we got drunk)

On the other hand, I met one of my best friends online, we got on like a house on fire.

There are some online friends I have who might be good going-out friends, we only talk about superficial topics, what's for dinner, Russel Crowes accent, lolcats...
Most of them live in America-land so I'll never find out.

Hey, I bet that the oldie-boardies who have known the OP online for years are paranoid now they he/she/lemon secretly hates them in Real Life and only like them online, hahaha! And if they weren't maybe they are now!

How would ya define friend though.
Someone you go out with all the time or someone that you'd stop and say hello to on the street?

Depends, here on boards.ie I'd be mates with a few of the lads in the Martial Arts forum (I've even beat, and been beaten by some).

On facebook I don't tolerate randomers and if I haven't had any direct communication with anyone for a few weeks I'll cull them, so my FB friends list stays more or less around the 60-70 mark, but they're all people I'd call friends.

So overall I'd say we're looking at 80-90 between boards & FB.

Almost all of my friends on my social networks are people I know IRL. People I could pick up the phone and call for a chat at any time. I don't add people I don't know and I deny any friend requests from people I've never met, including those I have mutual friends in common with. I use FB to keep in touch with friends and to organise nights out, birthdays, holidays etc. It's handy for that.

Saying that I've added one or two people I keep in regular contact with solely over the internet. These are usually people I've gamed with or are members of a club/charity I'm involved with. Chances are I'll get to meet them at some stage IRL though through parties or events. Could never understand the attraction of allowing some complete random stranger access to your photos, thoughts or friends list.

I don't add people on Facebook unless I know 'em. On my Boards friends list, it's just people who I've met in RL or posters who I talk to a lot.

Myself, Face Kicker and Ro sing for the children in Crumlin Hospital at the weekends. We wouldn't be able to do this together if we weren't the best of friends.

I don't really use social networking sites. I have a Myspace but only use it to check band tour dates and that. I network in a more professional capacity on another site and am friendly with some people off it but everyone knows who everyone else is on it as it's a much smaller more specialised site.

I've met a few people on boards in real life but that's about it. The person I'd consider a friend I've known since I was a teenager and boards didn't even exist. But there are one or two lurkers who know who I am and used to read my posts a lot. I don't know if they do anymore but if they do it's quite sad.

Yeah sure, have made friends from boards, facebook etc.
Sure not all of them, but a lot of the time if you have a similar taste/humour you will get on great. More likely to be friends with somebody with something in common rather than randomers in your class etc.

    Those vids are interesting!

I only add people on facebook that I have actually met and know, might make a rare rare exception once or twice but its been fine.

Boards friends list is posters I get on well with or have met in RL.

Very very tempted to go on a massive facebook cull because I am definitely not friends with all 230 odd people on my friends list

I actually know about 95% of my facebook friends in real life.
The 5% I don't know, are people that have friends in common with me.

As for boards friends... well, I only have 5, so there's not much to speak of. But out of the 5, I know 3 and a half.

The boys from the boards team, I know one other poster from a long time ago and i know a couple of peoples who post on here in real life pretty well but they dont know my username :)

My brothers friends and stuff add me on fb, does my brain in, one in particular kept adding me for weeks and i kept ignoring him so now its sitting there in my pending requests for a few months/

Internet friends are a bit like E friends. It's all good while you have the same buzz in common.

you better be talking about me mr choptor :pac:

I've made a few friends on boards who I'd go for drinkies with. I also once kissed another boardsie a long (long) time ago :pac:

As regards facebook, mostly it's just friends that are on there, there's a few who are friends that I wouldn't see often, or girls I knew in school but not really any unknowns.

There are 2 people on my FB friends list who I have never met in real life, One is a boardsie only, the other is a boardsie who happens to be one of my Best friends sisters, haven't met her in real life yet...but I will, specifically because I want to freak my friend out because he is sure I am gonna try to sleep with her! :D

My boards friends list is more liberal, I will add anyone who adds me, but I do know half of them in real life.

I get on very well with a lot of people in real life and online, and have kept in touch with a few former colleagues from previous jobs, but I have a very small circle of what I would call true friends. One of those is an American lady I met online. She is one of the treasures of my life, and is someone whom I would miss greatly if she was not there.

So, I suppose the answer is - one online friend who is a real friend.

Now I feel I'm being really mean about my other "online friends".

"Been beat". Grammar. Paramount. The beautiful one has been beat. Culling too, very 19th century. And grading in a mark of 60-70 and 80-90 is quite cute.
