J1 Accommodation New York

Can anyone tell me if it's better to get accommodation before going over? I was thinking of going and staying in a hostel for the first week or two and then getting an apartment over there. Thought it might be easier to avoid scams and things that way. But I'm worried there won't be anything left by then, that all the good places will be snapped up. If anyone has any experience it would be great to hear from you.

Well if you find somewhere to take a deposit and everything before you come over just check that person out. Get as much information on them as you can (full name, email, location of rental) and google it. You'd be surprised how stupid some people can be, you can find a lot of information about someone on the net! It'll be obvious that they're scammers if they try to get a large amount of money off you before you come over. Or if they say they will send the keys to you. Paypal works best for these kind of things, no wiring money or anything, that's shifty!

i agree with lil lisa there...i went to new york on a j1 2 summers ago (best holiday of my life) and we booked a place in astoria, queens that was a bit pricey. we paid a deposit through paypal before we went over

i still have the email address of the landlord if you'd like me to pm it to you

Thanks for the advice, yeah the details for that landlord would be great! Do you remember how much you paid per month, out of curiosity? I'm hearing all kinds of things about how much I should be looking to pay, anywhere between $400 and $1200. What's realistic?

i would advise not to get something until you move over, can be very dodgy dealing with people online and i know a pfew who got scammed last year. i spent the summer last year in nyc, stayed in brooklyn and had the best summer of my life. cried my eyes out the whole way back to ireland! i would advise booking into a hostel for 10 days and look around then, i ended up paying 700 a month but the apartment was in a great location. make sure you book the hostel now as i didnt so that and ended up couch surfing for the 1st two weeks which was very stressful.
