The toll tags have me completely confused - which company to use, eflow, tolltag, etc and which type of toll tag to get, 'pay as you go', top up ones, etc.

I'm going to be using the new toll near Portlaoise regularly.
    Between 6 and 10 times a week I'd say.
Very rarely use the other tolls, only maybe once a month or so, so I've just been paying cash up to now.

Can anyone advise as to which tag to get.
    I'd greatly appreciate it.

This does not work on the Portlaoise toll. At all.

I use easytrip for a number of reasons, mainly because their tag is a normal size that can be hidden behind the mirror not a bloody monster like eFlow's, and because they had the cheapest startup fees - at the time. Which was about three years ago.

Hmm, reviewed the link. From my reading of it:

TollTag.ie's "Pay as you Toll+" seems the best to me.

Free tag, no deposit or postage, Zero Fixed Monthly Fee.

You pay 10% Transit Fee. So if you get a €1.80 toll say, it's 18cent each time. Min. top up is €20 but you'd need that anyway really.

I'm open to correction if I've missed a cheaper option/misunderstood this?

Would it not depended on your usage? For instance with the toll i use twice daily(€1.80 a go), over a 4 week period it adds up to €72. I recently got a eflow tag & while i've yet to get my first bill, i should be getting charged €1.21 monthly fee, thats €73.21 then, i havent really looked at the other options but by what your saying would my bill not be €79.20 with the one your describing?

Within......7 tolls of €1.80 you'd end up getting charged more per month. .....i think, if my maths are right.

That's exactly what my maths told me but again I might be wrong. I chose eFlow as it's only 1.21/mo and I can tell you that I created my tag account on Wednesday morning (~ 09:30 AM) and the tag was waiting for me the next in the letterbox. Honestly I was impressed, I hadn't thought it could be so quick!

Ah yes. I should have said I'd only make c. 2 return trips a month through tolls, so it's the best option for me.

Update. The comparison website is not 100% accurate. So beware when choosing which is best for you.

I found the following when I went to get the Pay As You Go+ from TollTag.ie

    1) You must pay 20euro deposit (tagcompare.ie said there was None!)

    2) You must pay €1 top up fee each time each time if using using Credit or Debit Cards. Only Laser cards are free (tagcompare.ie did not allude to this).

Most banks have now switched to Debit Cards so not many people will still have them.

    3) While the min. top up amount is 20euro, as per tagcompare.ie, there is also a min. account balance of 12euro!

This puzzled me. But I just realised it must be because of the Dublin Port Tunnel. It's 10euro for a car at certain times (and used to be 12euro). TollTag.ie obviously never dropped their account balance min. to 10euro when the toll fell.

I'm now going to have to start again reviewing which is best!

AIB told me they were to dump laser cards next year for visa debit ones.

When did they introduce this top up fee? It wasn't there when I signed up.

    Hi all,

Just wanted to give you some information about an eFlow tag account:

Tolls for a car cost €2.00 with an eFlow tag so you save €1.00 per toll passage.
The tag works on all tolls in the Republic of Ireland.

Payment is automated and can be either:

Post-pay - The total for a month being debited the following month, after a statement is sent to the customer
Pre-pay - Automated top-up of a minimum of €30, amount set by customer and remains the same unless the customer elects to change it – customer notified before top-up is taken

Visa debit cards can be used as the payment means on the account (so far, permanent TSB and Ulster Bank have replaced Laser with these).
The eFlow tag is now a smaller size.
The tag account fee is €1.21 per month (including VAT) per vehicle.

For contact/further info, see my sig. :)

    Hope this helps,
    Una

The toll tag crowd have a PayAsYouGo regular option that's cheaper to start and a lot less BS.

    Hi sealgaire,

Stepping in for Una here : )

The €1.00 discount per toll with a tag applies to the M50. All other tolls are charged at local rates. Using a tag has many advantages at the other tolls. Use of the express lanes, not having to stop, fuel/time savings and not having to fumble in the pocket or bag for change.

I have a tag myself, I do not use the M50 at all, but if find it handy at the other tolls I use.

    Regards,

    John

I rarely use ANY tolls at all. Maybe 3-5 times a year. Does the eflow video tag (which seems to be the best for me) work for ALL tolls? I live in Dublin but rarely use the M50 toll - less than the country ones.

    All Hail Mighty Caesar!

If you are a very infrequent user of any tolls (M50 and elsewhere) I recommend the free Video Registration account with eFlow (we're the only providers of this type of a/c).
    • Its Free - No setup, annual or monthly fees
    • Tolls discounted by €0.50 per toll
    • No payment deadlines
    • No late payment penalties
    • Rewards Card with great offers
    • On-line setup with instant cover
    • Automatic payments
    • If you don't use the M50 toll, you pay nothing
In addition, you can cover up to 6 chariots on a private a/c. Business a/c's cover more. To use other tolls, you can pay in cash the odd time you pass through.

If at any time, you find you need to use the M50 more frequently (e.g. while on campaign), or need to use other tolls, you can convert your Video a/c to a Tag a/c.

So Mighty Caesar, hope this information assists,

    John

It doesn't work on any other toll.
