Accessing HD data on broken laptop

Ok, I think my laptop might be dead. If so, I have lots of data on the HD which isn't backed up. Does anyone know of a method of hooking the laptop HD up to another computer and accessing the information that way? For example, could I in practice turn it into an additional HD on my desktop with some special sort of cable?

If this is possible, what sort of equipment/expertise do I need?

Alos I should add that obviously the HD is not the reason the laptop may be dead!
