wmp error code C00D0FAB

Hope someone can help. Recently I restored my pc after a problem with windows not able to download updates (fixed), but now have noticed that wmp 11 will not rip cds. When I tell it to rip it starts ok but stops after about 10-20% and shows above error code. (dvds playback ok)
Web help with above code says to turn on error correction but this does not help and its not dirty discs. I have even reinstalled rom drives (TSST corp CDDVDW TS-H653N) driver but to no avail, and cannot seem to find any useful help on the web
Any help would be appreciated as this seems to be a bit of a puzzler, I'm moderately proficient user, so be gentle with me.

I feel like I am anyway with this bloody vista. Is 7 worth the change I wonder.

There is a number of threads here asking that question.
Very much "yes" is the answer - and I agree.

7 is what Vista should have been.
