I'm thinking of going over to France on the ferry in August for a camping hol as I hear good things about the standard of campsites over there.
Has anyone been and any recomendations will be thanked profusely!

Camping in France is the best holiday ever... I'm going again in June.

Firstly you have to decide if you are going to bring your own tent or rent one. If your going to rent one over there look at eurocamp, canvas holidays or keycamp.

The quality of campsites France are excellent. Most have pools onsite and have bars and restaurants onsite also. The shower blocks are usually spotless also. HAve a look at the Eurocamp/keycamp website to get an idea of campsites.

You need to decide which part of France you want to go to - a beach, inland, winetasting, etc. We are going to the Loire valley this year. Its about 5hours from Cherbourg so not too long a drive. We got the Michelin guide to campsites which is well worth having.

If it is your first year I would look at the Eurocamp website and perhaps choose one to start with - so at least you know that you have a nice campsite to start with. If you decide to move, you will be able to look around the campsite before deciding whether to camp there or not...

    Have a great time.

Are you thinking of a tent or mobile home ?

Stayed in a mobile last year and going again this year.
Loved the freedom, especialy with a small child.
Fantastic pools, but restaurants on campsites can be hit or miss.

Brittany Ferries from Cork are very good.

Went with Keycamp last year, mobiles were pretty new and in good condition.
Keycamp staff were at best clueless and some of them were very rude.
Canvas had mobiles in the same park, they weren't as new, but we observed the Canvas staff in action and they were streets ahead of Keycamp.
Going with Siblu this year, they are supposed to be good.

We invested in a roof box, doubles up your luggage space.

August will probably be very hot, expensive and busy.
Brittany is lovely and probably the coolest area in August.

We have been to Brittany for the last few years, It is a really good holiday.
We usually get a Mobile home as we have witnessed what tents can be like in inclement weather.
South Brittany gets a little warmer than the Nth of Brittany, south of Nantes is the line where it gets noticeably warmer.
Keycamps Mobile homes are a lot better than the Canvas ones, we have tried both and prefer Keycamp.
If you have kids the two big firms Keycamp and Canvas have kids clubs which are great for them.
If its just adults then some of the smaller firms may be a better deal.
Brittany ferries are the best for crossings faster and nicer onboard food.
We are waiting on a passport for our youngest so if it doesn't come in the next week or two the holiday might have to be called off for this year:(
