I have a few years of summer experience as a waitress in hotels, catering companies etc. Thing is I don't really have any references....

I've never really had to do an "interview" per say, nor have I been asked for references, applying for a waitressing job this summer they asked me for a couple of references ..

I just listed off a couple of previous employers....do you think they check them? I have nothing to hide but i doubt the employers from last summer will remember much about me:o .....should I have given someone who could have given more of a character reference rather than an employer?

No just give a reference. They would be wondering why if you have previous jobs are you unable to provide any references.

Its a simple process. My OH often gets phone calls on her mobile from her days as a retail manager of people in other shops asking for references and its normally quite informal unless HR is involved who really go all "red tape" on it.

    Most ask

    1. Did X work for you?
    2. How Long
    3. What did they do?
    4. Why did they leave?
    5. Would you recommend them?

Its important, I imagine, in your job for a reference because you are handling credit cards and cash.

It is always a good idea to check with a person before you give them as a reference. One sure way to loose a job opportunity is to have one of your referees refuse to give a reference or to be unable to give a reference because they can't remember you!

I think most people who get a call to give a reference will generally give a decent reference for you, even if they didn't know you that well. Think you should def put down previous employers, in my experience they will generally only call one referee, just to verify that you are not a complete physco! Very best of luck anyhow
