Difene V Nurofen

I have a prescription for Difene for a fracture .

    To control pain.

But seen to be having much more success with Nurofen Plus.

What is the difference in the two products.

I was under the impression that the Difene 75 was much stronger. Yet an over the counter med seems to help much better. Is that strange?

Nurofen Plus contains codeine as well as a Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory. Codeine is a very effective painkiller, but it can be addictive so it is not recommended for long term use. It can also cause severe constipation when taking for prolonged lengths of time.

75mg of Diclofenac, found in Difene, would be a stronger NSAID dose than the 200mg of Ibuprofen in a Nurofen Plus tablet. If your pain is muscular, you could always get Difene gel, or an equivalent product to augment the pain relief, or use some of the heat based wraps sold in pharmacies.

    So .

Would I be correct in saying that Diclofenac or Ibuprofen does not directly stop pain . It only reduces inflammation.

While Codeine does directly numb pain. But has no anti-inflammatory properties .

Im cast so can only use oral pain relief.

I simply want to understand what exactly the effects of the drugs has on the body.

Both codeine and diclofenac/ibuprofen (and all NSAIDs) give pain relief (analgesia), they just work in different ways. You are correct in saying that diclofenac/ibuprofen reduce inflammation but they also reduce pain through their dampening effect on inflammatory mediators. Whether this can be classified as having a "direct" painkilling effect or not is arguing semantics really.

Codeine has no anti-inflammatory properties. The combination of an NSAID plus codeine is often useful since the NSAID has an opioid-sparing effect i.e. you won't need to use as much of a strong painkiller such as codeine than if you were just taking codeine only.

On a slightly off topic issue.

Why does my injury swell . I follow the routine of elevation to make it disappear. Which works. Each night like clockwork.

but after a week it still swells inside the cast. This is my 3rd cast after the other 2 where cut off by me. after blue toes. panic stations and quite distressing .

Why? what is the purpose of swelling? Generally . why does an injury swell up

think of it this way, rather simplistic but it hurts-there is damage so the cells rush to the area to help healing creation of fluid being part of this, same idea why its warm....increased blood, simples;)

well its not as simple as this but its late it helps you understand without explaining nf-at, non-canonical nfkb signalling or something you wont remember. Im sure someone else will be on to explain better
