Editing midi velocities in cubase 5

I want to change the velocities of some hi hats on a drum sample. However when I draw in lower velocities on the hats on controller lane it also lowers the volume of the snare and bass drum. How do I get it to just lower the velocities of the hi hats?

If you select the hi hats only in the sequencer pane you should see their respective sliding controls turn dark in the velocity window and be able to click/hold and drag down those volumes leaving the others intact.

If that doesn't work, sounds like the vst being used to play the sounds maybe getting the wrong message.

this is easier to do in the drum editor rather than the piano roll,
you can open the drum editor by selecting a drum map in the track properties pane.
then the velocities of each drum sound is display individually..

note the drum editor defaults to midi channel 10, so make sure your vst has the drum kit on midi 10 if it is a multibral rompler like Kontakt.
