If he could do that regularly it would be lethal. It would certainly do away with the kickathons we get a lot of.

He learned the trick from an earlier game where Francois Steyn scored an amazing one for Racing Metro against Clermont.

It was from further out, and went miles past the posts too.

The difference in strike between Steyn and James' DGs is huge.

James' is like a lame duck flopping over the line, Steyn's more like an eagle straight and true.

Longest ever drop goal on video? I'm sure it is one of Steyn's. His latest is probably the longest but I think he has hit a few from further back but that kick had serious legs on it.

Steyn's looks like he could be easily 20-30 yard further back and still make it. Almost on his 22, it's incredible.

About the same distance with this one, but a bit closer to the touch line.

There aren't many stages bigger in the world to pull off a drop goal like this:

On a side note, Toulon will win the Heineken Cup in the next 5 years. I'm tempted to say 3, but I'm being conservative. It'll be a dark day for rugby when they do. Chelsea don't belong in rugby.

All great Drop kicks. Considering the pressure, James's one was really good ( how could he not do that in the H Cup?). Steyn is a phenom, what the hell are his legs made off?

    You're being harsh IMO.

All sides spend big money to win silverware. Toulon have just spent more.

I don't think Munster would have won the HEC in 2008 without the Mafi-Tipoki-Howlett axis. Likewise Leinster the following year without Wright, Nacewa and particularly Elsom.

Anyway, you need to do more than flash the cash to build a winning side. I'd say Saint-Andre's arrival did more for that side than any of its individual signings.

I agree that Toulon should be challenging for the HEC within 2-4 years. They will probably be a fourth tier club for next season's draw so it will be difficult for them to progress to the knockouts next season.

Toulon has a great rugby history in France. They last won the Brennus in 1991 if i remember well and they missed the step of professional transition.

This is why they have a massive crowd following them and have always had.

Brive did the same thing than Toulon at the end of the 90's, spent a lot of cash and won 1 HCup- a great finale against Leicester BTW - and then lost surpisingly to Wasps the following year in Fianle again.

    @ thomond,

both examples used 3 foreign imports.

How many newbies have Toulon this year?

(Although I don't disagree with it, its how the game is progressing)

    I agree with Jackass tbh.

Every team needs foreign players, no one's questioning that but when roughly 13 of your starting 15 are foreign imports then something's amiss. Now obviosuly this is the Amlin team and the likes of Mignoni and Bruno would probably be regular starters (I think) but it's still a very high number.

If Munster ever got to a situation like that (which we won't thankfully as the IRFU will forbid it) I can't say I'd care as much as I do now for them.

They have had a lot more new players (Bruno, Lobbe, Wilkinson, Contepomi to name a few) but you still need to gel them all together, Saint-Andre has done that.

I have no problem with Boudejall (sp) flashing the cash. He seems to love his rugby, I remember him doing the Pilou Pilou chant with the Toulon players in the dressing room after the match at Connacht.

My point is that all teams spend money (to various degrees obviously), it's not a crime.

Risteard, it's a totally different mindset in France. Clubs don't act as 'direct' feeders to the national team, they have their own agenda.

Apologies if my point seems a bit muddled.

That doesn't stop the likes of Toulouse, Stade Francais or Perpignan having predominantly French squads. Squads have to be bigger for the Top 14, sure as they play a lot more matches but I don't want to see Rugby go the way of Football whereby a teams success is pretty much determined by their bank balance.

Anyway, I think the Top 14 are introducing salary caps and minimum requirements for French players so that might slow Toulon down a bit.

I agree entirely with what you say but I'm afraid once Rugby went professional it was over time going to go the same way as Football.

I don't know, Rugby will never have the same profile as football and the implementation of a salary cap on French teams, even if it is €8 million, and setting out a minimum % of French players in their squads should keep it under control but as I said, if it ever got to a situation where the Munster team was made up primarily of foreign signings, I'd probably stop watching.

I just hate the whole idea of 'buying' trophies.
