A big screen version of 'The Big Valley,' the 1965-69 ABC western, is inching closer to production, now that the filmmakers have finally found someone who can stand in for the iconic Barbara Stanwyck.
According to Variety, the film will begin shooting in July with Jessica Lange in the role Stanwyck played, as the widowed, iron-willed matriarch of a prosperous ranching family in 1870s California.
As Inside Movies reported in February, the long-in-development 'The Big Valley' was close to casting Susan Sarandon a few months ago. Lange, fresh off her recent Emmy win for 'Grey Gardens,' may be an even better choice, given her history of similar roles in such projects as 'A Thousand Acres,' 'Country' and 'O Pioneers!'
'Big Valley' was a popular show that revived the career of movie legend Stanwyck and launched those of costars Linda Evans and Lee Majors. (No word yet on who'll play Evans' and Majors' roles in the film.) The series (whose first season is streaming at SlashControl) was created by Louis Edelman, whose daughter, Kate Edelman Johnson, is an executive producer of the movie. Daniel Adams wrote the film's screenplay (based on the series pilot) and will direct it, with filming set to begin July 19 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Jessica Lange is better choice than Susan Sarandon imo
