Ok, have about 8k to spend and cant decide what to get,
had my heart set on an IS200 but the high fuel consuption is putting me of.
    So now I'm thinking,

    e36 318ci, Octavia VRS 1.8t or A4 1.8t.

What would you get? any other options?

The BMW isn't even in the same performance class, why would you buy a bog-spec 318 if you want a VRS?

    VRS FTW!

This might be worth a look at:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200948195974778

Same engine (detuned?) and chassis as the vRS but better looking imo.

If your worried about fuel consumption in an IS200, your going to save very very little buying a 1.8T car. If you drive it in boost, you'll use more petrol than an IS200.
Granted, you'll save a few quid a year on road tax.

Practicality wise, do you need 4 seats or a big boot?

I see that Black one on Gumtree around quite a lot. The high roof spoiler just looks wrong to me - couple that with the wind deflectors and tinted windows.........

The silver one looks pretty good value.

Out of the 3 cars you've listed, the Octavia gives the most bang for your buck and very little comes close to it for performance and specification at that price.

I still miss mine, but at least I know it's in good hands - sold it to the Brother in Law

Just 'cause he's family don't mean it's in good hands :D

Personally I'd go for the vRS - a very enjoyable drive. The 1.8T is shocking wrt fuel consumption depending on your routes of course....

I was averaging 35mpg in mine, but it was mainly off boost, 5th gear Motorway work. Biggest issue I had was that the tank wasn't quite big enough for me to get a whole week of driving out of so if I'd filled up on Monday morning I'd have to stop on Friday afternoon.

they are a fairly abysmal yoke to drive as well. Nothing but understeer and an awful ride.
